Transit Won't Start

Postby cameraman » Sun Jan 22, 2006 2:35 pm

Can anyone help me find out why my Transit won't start.

It's a 1996 smiley with a 2.5D engine and has a Bosch Fuel Injector pump.

The van was driving fine and then for some mysterious reason wouldn't start after a few days parked idle. Battery is fully charged and and starter cranks engine over fast.

I wondered if it was a sticking stop solenoid but can't find it on the fuel injector pump, which is a Bosch model, but doesn't look like the one shown in the Haynes Manual. Does anyone know where the solenoid is?

Any help or other suggestions would be much appreciated.

mines about half way up the rear of the back of the pump and points in towards the manifold just a bit and upwards if you look from the front around the regulator on top you can just see the wire that powers it , to test turn on the power to pos 2 and unplug the wire ,then you can test by touching it on to the conector and it will click if its ok

The solenoid should be hidden behind a black cover on that vehicle.

Have you tried to bleed the fuel system?
It's quite possible a fuel drain back/air ingress has occured because of the length of time it's stood.

I had this and it was caused by a loose wire under the steering wheel.

If they are exposed try gently moving them back and forth whilst turning the key.

Was it parked on a slope? We have had to bleed the fuel system of air when a vehicle has been left pointing slightly uphill for a while.

Make sure the injector bleed off pipe, return is not on number 4 cylinder and is on no1 cylinder This was a factory mod .lenghten the pipe and block no 4 we modified my sons. No1 is slighly higher than 4 and is prone to getting air in until it's modified . Dont ask me how I've been wracking my brains to work that out .
Mike my son had a problem with his 2.5 when it had run all day ,went back 2 hours later wouldn't start we traced it to a broken injector tip, that was hard to sus out ,I thought it was the pump solonoid but it was pumping fuel so went further we ended up towing it. it started on what sounded like three cylinders I did give me a bit of a headache but alls well now
I should know better at my age !!!!!
