just over six months and a little over 20000 miles in that time in a 2000 plate 350 van. now it's over. never again will i stand at a diesel pump once every two days, sometimes twice a day. never again will i struggle up the m6 past junction 24, never again will i have to leave the drivers window down in case it decides to lock itself up with the keys in the ignition and the engine running.... why? a change of job come monday and i fear may disqualify me from reading this forum. it's sprinters, vito's atego's and actros from now on. sorry folks. especially nighthawks boss who was very interested in my c.v. but did'nt want to pay the going rate.....

Congrats Paul,

You can rest at night knowing you'll never be out of work at a merc dealer.....at the moment they have a worse reliability record than the transit

Next time I swing by there, i might nip into the shop for a cuppa 8)

all i can say is, as far as reliability goes, it's all good news as i'm being paid to fix em, not paying to have problems sorted. at my last decent job, the level of complexity was quite something. erf were quite happy coping with electronic engine management and stone age everything else. along came MAN and all of a sudden we were updating vehicle files in munich via broadband everytime we changed an electric window switch, door module in man-erf speak. as i think i've said before, it's time to embrace the future cos vehicle manufacturers seem hell bent on driving the back street garage out of business...

four days on, now four days off! the job is quite an eye opener in as far as the mb-star diagnostic software is quite something. perhaps because it needs to be but time will tell. i dont think any of you transit owners have anything to fear, as having driven a semi auto sprinter last night, i pined for my old works van...

This doesn't mean you can't have a transit of your own does it?

sorry but my opinion is transits are for work. as much as i liked it, at the end of the week i was glad to park it up. my choice of personal ride is a 2.5 si mondeo. quite subtle and overall cheap comfortable and reliable.i joined the forum to try and help and i'll continue that. coming from a long line of ford fans, it still would be a buzz to work at a ford dealership but circumstances mean i have to be realistic. as for ford vs merc, i'm here to provide info when i find out more.

Even if you don't need it, grab it.
The minute you do need it, it'll be gone.

Really  ? Aren't they the little things you can't even get an easy chair in, let alone a 3 piece suite? Those things that are like sitting on the floor looking up van's exaust pipes?

And hence why most of Africa is turning its back on the Mercs etc, if you've drivin the roads I have in the past you'll see that franchised dealers mean nothing, eventually a manufacturer will soon see the light that fixing a van 800miles from the nearest link up is not feasible, its this very gap in the market the Japs or Chinnesse will grab and the likes of Ford and merc will loose, one may think Africa isnt a big market but the fact is it is, I wont go on to say how much Toyota dominates the South Afican market for nothing, by far and proven to be the most reliable vehicle going for along time and time to come, I've never seen a Toyota break down not once
