FWD or RWD

Thinking about a new or newish Transit. What advantage / disadvantage does FWD have over RWD. What are the members of this forums preferred choice. I currently have a mk4.

fwd offers a lower loading platform, easier to get motorbikes in and out, when its time to replace my s reg tranny i think i will go for a rwd though, rwd layot much simpler form a clutch, drivetrain point of veiw

rwd is better for towing and carrying heavier loads!
fwd is a better van for light use!!

On FWD vans the front tyres dont last as long, but with a RWD the wear is less on the front.

agreed! still cant get me head round a tranny having a car derived diesel in it. dont get me started on the 1.9 litre breed of vans! still spose plus side is a quiter and smoother ride, just doesnt sit right in me head at the mo, commercial vehicles should have rwd and a nice lazy motor, not these horrid revy things they are fitting these days. must get a go in a new 2.4 rwd van soon, as this will probably replace the venerable 100 lwb in a few years time

Any van worth its salt is an AWD with mechanical front drive and two electric motors inside the rear wheels, at least until fuel cells are ready when we can then have an electric motor in each wheel.

In my case I would have to put the electric motors inside the front wheels and I'm ready to start as soon as they are available, and with a few more solar panels on the roof I might even do away with the engine and fuel tanks. ;0
