RUST

Im sure everyone here has suffered the fate of ye ole Ford rust on the Transit!

Im no different, luckily its all cosmetic and not structural........

Where do u guyz/ gals go to get ures done, or do u try and sort it yourself?

When its time to sort out the rust i will pay someone else to do it but will only use them if they are recommended and do a great job

Yeah I'd be really interested in a compreehensive how-to on dealing with cosmetic body rust. I've got a few patches on my van. I had a go at dealing with it when i got the van, since I'm not looking for showroom condition I just treated it with white Smoothrite but the rust came back through in only a few weeks.
I rubbed it down first but apparently I did something wrong. Probably there were pin holes in the paint and I should have put on several coats.

GET IT BACK TO BARE METAL THEN TREAT IT WITH PLENTY OF PAINT

i think the only way is to have the arches replaced and new front arches and wings but this will cost loads to have done ! filling it in will not last 5 mins . i have a frend with a 98 bus he had it all filled and painted it looked perfect the next day the rear arch was bubbling again!

You don't recommend using any of that rust treatment stuff like Krust?

the bloke we use for bodywork charges £350 to fit new front wings and arches we had the blue hicube done 3yrs ago and theres no sign of any rust or bubbling yet

no just front arches and wings that includes supplying them
probably a little expensive but at least we know we have had a good job done

Mines going in for two new wings and the sliding door side sill + complete respray next week, cost £550. I'm chuffed with that as the same guy respayed my old tranny and it lasted for years.....untill a bike nut decided to kiss my back doors

kure-rust type stuff is ok but it tends not to take to bare metal - only seems to adhere to surface rust - ive never had great sucsess with it but its better than nowt i suppose!!

best thing like blade says - grind all the rust out back to bare metal - if you have to grind all the way through then panel was rotton anyway and it would have come back!!!

My old man fitted new arches, cut out and re panelled the door steps both sides and re-sprayed/ waxed for four cans of SpeciaL Brew
He hasnt the time to do the rest tho, need rear arches done and all along the seals both sides...................

my dad is ok at doing small bodywork jobs but we just dont have the time to do them you see when its at the body shop he's on hols so we dont actually have any time off the road anyway we can sleep at night knowing we have had a good job done

and its not like im paying for it so it dont bother me when mine gets sorted i will be helping the guy out so's to bring the cost down

I depends what you are doing with the van. If you are keeping it, you can either do the work yourself or shop around for a good job. There is no reason not do a good job or preperation and have a respray to keep the cost down. If it's time to part company and you just want a blow over, there is a whole range of cowboys around who will do the job! Either way, if you don't cut out the rust it will come back!
