fuel pump

i got a x reg newshape,i had the seals on the fuel pump replaced about 18months ago,taking in air,its a 90ps but i find it looses power up hill,are these generally slow up hill? as soon as it levels it picks up a good speed,if this sounds like a worn fuel pump,the van has 259,000 on it,is there anywhere that do resonably priced pumps as i dont facy paying 650 quid for one off ford,i dont want to go the route of recon as before this i had a ldv convoy withe "bunch of bannanas" manifold had reconed pump but never made much difference.also,ive not worked it out yet,but fuel seems to pretty poor im getting 350-400 mile from a tank,roughly 75 miles to the tenner of fuel mixed route,its the hi top,yet some one i know,med top,gets 500 mile a tank from his.cheers

i think your doing well on your fuel i drive a 04 low roof swb and can only just squeeze 400 from a tank. i normally get 350 but i do always drive as fast as the van goes ie 100mph.

is that a typo 259,000 if its not and its 1999 model I would not spend any money on it at all. Trade it in and get a new/newer one

I only keep mine up to about 100,000 by then they start costing money. Its cheaper to get a new one with 3 years waranty

looking at all the problems that people are haveing with pumps ,mass flywheels etc i am very put off by owneing one of these vans ,at least with the smiley you know rufly were you are! normaly out with a dust pan and brush sweeping up the rust off the arches LOL

ye but mechanically the smiley keeps on going im suprised people havent converted mk6's to 2.5 di power

Yeah the fuel pumps are really expensive, count yourself lucky you haven't got anything from Sep 05 on... A technician at ford was telling me they changed it and the replacement part is now close to £1000

Also, he told me that they have had so many new transits in for a Head Replacement cause the timing chain tensioner keeps going that they are soon doing a recall as its costing them too much.

Every time a tensioner goes, the cam snaps and the head breaks too... Certainly a cash drainer if it's not under warranty! So if you do buy a new one... But another before your warrantys up!

On the fuel consumption, we got about 425 miles out of a tank on a MWB M Roof 2001 2.4 75ps I think it is (I get confused) and that's pretty much as far as the needle can go down! We tend to follow the mileage as we find the needle sits just above empty for aaages!

I have a rear wheel drive medium roof, medium wheel base 90ps, on my trip to Spain fully loaded with a loaded caravan I averaged 350 to 390 per tank, I nearly cracked the 500 mark this week with a light load in Spain and we have to contend with all these mountain passes, going to Malaga is all down hill and the engine just coasts down but ot comming back.

I replaced my Injector pump before I left as it had a nasty fuel leak, £1300 later and all went well, it had 132000 on the clock and as diesel engines go I consider this to have just broken in, high mielage on a diesel is nothing but only if it is serviced, engine oil replacement is the most critical when it comes to servicing.

As for the fuel consumption Im not a speed merchant in a van, dont see the point of going over its comfort rev range as this is the secret in good fuel use and keeping it out of the worshop for costly repairs, most vans owned by companies break down mainly through abuse, you just need to stand at a set f traffc lights and watch how they pull away from M3s etc

xbox 259k is correct its still goes well,so fuel econ is about average,i usually do 70-80 mph i dont go mad,i cant replace it for another 4 years unless i get a good contract,couriering only drags you further and further in to debt so im going to buy a brand new engine for it at around 400-500k if it dont blow up first,and try to get it to 000000 on the clock! i may get the pump presure tested.

Ever considered buyng a good low mileage 2nd hnd engine, by then you'll pay alot less than now, I was offered one from northen transits for £800 with a genuine mileage of 28 000miles, they were out of injector pumps at that time but sold them for £200 that vs new/recon at £1000+ I wouls say makes a big difference to your running costs
