socket size for oil filter housing

I tried removing my filter housing before I left the UK and I couldnt, I did note that there seems to be what I call a drain screw on the bottom, its a allen key type bolt (cap bolt), when I tried to rmove it the inner capped section just gave way, seems to made form aluminium, anyone shed any light on ths as I replaced the oil only before leaving and not the filter..
