Mk2 pinto MT75 conversion

i have a mk2 2.0l pinto swb van, i have an mt75 gearbox, adapter plate and flywheel to go on.

i need a cross member, is the early mk3 lwb the best one? i cant weld, but can do drillin and boltin etc etc

i also need a propshaft, is there any that will just bolt up? or do i HAVE to get one custom made?

the van is a very late mk2 with a 4 speed overdrive box

I think the Mk3 had the type9 box, you need a crossmember to match the box, the Mk5 defo has the MT, look for one out of a Mk5. BTW what's wrong with the OD box? They are fine usually in the SWB, as long as they are factory.

g/b crossmember you want ideally is the mk3 lwb from a van that has the MT75 i think it was 86-88 that were type9 and 88-92 mt75

the reason for this cross member is the mounting points will be in the right positions - althogh it will still need a bit off modding - but less than the others

nothing wrong with it, all works fine at the mo, just want it to be a bit more quiet, it should be more efficient and it certainly will be lighter. The pinto has a little more power than standard so i'm not sure how long the 4 speed will last, i keep forgetting i need to take it easy with the syncros when driving enthusiastically

I'm not in a hurry to do the conversion, hence wanting to know which bits are most ideal, just planning ahead for a more robust gearbox

and i just got the box on ebay for peanuts

luke, the prop has a centre UJ and what looks like a sliding joint next to the middle bearing... is this a 2 piece?

Also the front half of the prop should be fine and join it to your rear half... I've got that too

If you want them and can fetch them they are yours for nowt.

get this bit if you can it will fit your floor perfectly, i know you cant weld but you could at a push bond and pop rivit it in - or get someone else to weld it for you

Its easier to just cut a hole in the floor dont you think Luke? Fine if you can weld but I wouldnt fancy just rivetting a large piece like that in

know what you mean but it makes the job much better - if mikes taking his time saving the bits it's well worth getting hold of that piece if the opertunity arrises - even if it doesnt get fitted strait away
i dont really think that piece has a great amount of strength in it the 2 main chassis rails front to back and the crossmembers side to side - theres 1 right behind that bit of floor, best welded in like you say - mabe an mot tester could confirm if it would be acceptable but i did weld it in on mine

I've a Recovery Transit with an overdrive 'box...

It weighs 2600kg and regularly tows 3000kg.....

At 500,000 kilometers it's still fine.

I had a Minibus that did 227000miles....

Only had 4 MT75 'boxes

you legend, i'm only down in hinckley so nottingham isn't far, i'd be only too happy to take the bits off your hands for some beer tokens if an evening is good i can get there for 6pm, otherwise it'll have to be friday afternoon or sunday.

i was planning on just cutting the floor and seeing how that goes, a welder is on the cards in the not too distant hopefully so i can also go back and do that later if i want. i definately dont want to be riveting in panels, smacks of bodgery!

captain - i have already gone through one 4 speeder (was already damaged when i got the van). The MT75 is a very well designed gearbox and far more modern than the type G. If it goes i'll struggle to find a good replacement, whereas there are loads of MT75's about. I hate knowing i've got an outdated, heavy, horrendously noisy bit of kit under me when a much better part can be fitted pretty easily and cheaply. I think you might have had some bad luck with mt's and good luck with the type G - it might well be suited to heavy loads but not so much high speeds.

I did ask if it was a factory OD. We have one in the minibus that's factory and it's great. I already have a spare in case it goes. I would just cut the floor for the MT (and have). Done neatly it's fine, and TBH would not pop rivet in a large section of floor, come to think of it I wouldn't pay a welder to to do that either.
