Nope, you haven't got the right alternator.

is that one of the later alt's with the built in vac pumps?? as it looks similar?? maybe a case of converting to old style??
You only need two tools in life: WD-40 and Duct Tape. If it doesn't move and it should, use WD-40. If it moves and shouldn't, use the duct tape.

It might be possivle to do it with that alternator but you would need to have a play, all I know is it's not the same as the one that was in the Tech how to. Pretty sure you need an un-rectified voltage.

a*se feck! So we need an auto electriction on here then, I am not about to swap a perfectly good alternator to an older version just to get a rev counter, I have a book...rather old one that shows how to install an ammeter...which I have (60 amp +/- so it is the correct version for alternator rather than Dynamo use and a non shunt version too) and this untilises a pick up from the alternator so in theory (?) a rev counter connection should be similar or am I just confusing myself further?

Amp meter is completly different and I think you are just confusing yourself!

Oh I know they are different but as they both appear to need a feed from the Alternator that was where I was going with the thinking.
Though to be fair a Rev counter monitors the engine crank speed NOT the alternator speed unless it is a sort of trick that if the alternator is being asked via the throttle to go faster the revs will increase...if the rev counter is connected to the distributor this would make better sense but then with a diesel you don't get to have one of those toys (well not in the same way as a petrol)....unless the pick up from the 3 terminals (which one hasn't been named just "if you have the three terminal alternator it will work") is a pickup of the equivilent of the distributor for the diesel engine

It's an un-rectifited voltage which means that as the engine speed varies so does the frequency of the output from the alternator, I could go into more detail but that kinda covers it!

Ok that is what I just said...in a thinking out loud way.
It was the lack of reasoning as to what is needed which was confusing me.
IE "you need this if not it won't work" was the only info to date....and we also now know that this isn't a definative answer as at least one other forum member had the right alternator but it wouldn't work.
This entire How to Subject needs to be re visited with *pictures* and alternatives as to connections if the original wiring doesn't work.

So now that is covered for me anyone want to buy a Mondeo cluster?

It does say in the tech how to that you need the 3 terminal alternator, but as said before you may still need to run the wire even if you have the right alternator.

The trouble is the How to is written from one person experience on one van and has we have found out they are not all the same!

The only way is to try it, have you got a multimeter that shows frequency? If so you can try and see if you have an un-rectified voltage from one of the terminals from the alternator, you never know you might as as far as I know from on here I don't think anyone has tried with your type of alternator so you never know!

This is the point I was making, sure it says you need the 3 terminal version and you may need to run a wire...doesnt say which terminal to take the feed from or where to connect the other end of the cable.
The mention of rectified or not as a requirement of fitting a rev counter wasn't mentioned just the type of Alternator. As a feed "could" be taken from an alternator such as mine but NOW due to this information (rectification) It is a no go.
I am not ranting just saying that the information is somewhat spread out and needs to be collected in one place.
A very good example is the EGR and fueling power tweaks...that info was everywhere until I made the now stickied thread. Plus some of the extra info needs to be added ref the max fueling settings and EGR breather pipe blocking possiblities.

STOP :!: Good news :D I've just checked mine under the bonnet and guess what :?: Same alternator :o Mine already has a rev counter :D . On the side of the alternator there's 2 wires. The bottom one is the WHITE/BLACK cable that is already there. Sorry I can't do photos :( . Have you got a white/black cable on your 16 pin connector :?: Pin 8 :?:

I know you are
As I said I wanted ALL the info before I started and due to the lack of collated info it was better to start a new thread.
