What happened to all the old custom vans

Postby JAY PS » Mon Dec 29, 2008 10:09 pm

im sure im not the only one ,what happened to those lovely 70s/80s vans that were done to a very high standard .
Dusty rose etc ive checked some regs from the main page and most seem to have used until 1989 and then laid up or scrapped ?
I know that transformation was seen in sw london on a arfur daley type forecourt looking very sorry for it self ,rusty wheels and sidepipes ,rotten bodywork and i heard it was seen on a scrap lorry heading for the unknown FORD scrap yard in the sky ,ahortly after .
Someone on here must know what happed to the rest .
There is a big revival thing going on in the hotrod /custom car scene ,some class prisewinners have been found lurking in garages and some still in the same hands since they were built.
Vans are really a different kettle of fish ,they are big and dont get stored in the dry easily and English weather isnt that kind to Ford metalwork .
Anyone shed any light !!!

me too i keep seaching on the DVLA database the reg numbers of them when i see old pics - and like you say most are gone :( such a shame :(

i'd have loved to have had the chance of getting any of them for scrap - even if they were kept untill a restoration became viable :D

Over the years i've noticed most show motors tend to last 4 or 5 years of being mint before the grot starts to show unless it's either,
A - really well done, most are filerd to buggery over grot cos they are old when built
B - stored in a propper heated garage, normaly excludeds vans cos of not fitting a normal garage pluss they need "A" as well or no matter what the rust creeps out again, seen some real nice show cars needing a rebuild desperatly after 5 years even those that have had mag articals ect.
IME it's only really the full on resto that lives in heated dehumidified tent that last more than that :(
