How do I remove fibreglass from the floorpan?

Postby welshrussell » Tue Jan 27, 2009 8:12 pm

These holes around the pedal were botched up by a garage with fibreglass.

I now want this welded properly.

Any suggestions on how I go about removing the fibrecrap off the floor and wheel arch :?:

Nice one - I knew I wasn't going to get an answer that said 'remove with a damp cloth'

This sounds like it could be a bit of a grim afternoon's work :D

I take it the fibres would do horrible things to my glass and dash :?:

One of those fierce looking wire brushes in an angle grinder will remove it. (The ones where the wire is twisted like a rope) Be carefull though, they'll rip your hands to bits and the dust will do your lungs a power of no good if you breath it in.

another option is a hammer and chisel getting under the edge and separating the rust from the fibreglass but whatever you do make sure you use gogles and a mask

Any of the above, but if you get underneath the van and can locate the holes I would try and push it all out with a hammer and chisel - I managed to get quite a bit of fibreglass out of one my wings with a hammer and chisel, the rest had to come out with the wire brush/ sander. Cheers, Andy.

main problem with an angle grinder which obviously thoseo fus that use them a lot realise is even the slightest contact with the metal underneath will create tiny glowing sparks. these although miniscule contain enough heat in them to embedd perfectly into windscreen/sidewindow glass and then be there permanently...
if your going to grind use something to mask off ALL the glass and plastics then youll be fine, and of course wear eye protection and a good quality dust mask not one of them weedy things from b+q as you will be effectively creating glass powder, a full bodysuit (disposable paper type) might be worthwhile as well as the dust will give you a nice itch where ever it hits bare skin

Hmmm :?

Maybe I'll just paint over it and then cover it with the new rubber floor mat.

That is if the holes aren't an MOT issue (they weren't last time) :?
