what carb is best

Postby davev6newman » Fri Jan 30, 2009 10:11 pm

I have a a 1979 Mk2 transit with a replacement engine fitted. Its a 2.0 HC Cortina engine with twin choke weber. trouble is, its drinks fuel worse than a V6. Question then, would it be better to fit a single downdraft from a transit or rebuild the twin? Do the engines differ from a car and a van? Any help appreciated.

I used to get 18/20 MPG out of my '74 Mk 3 cortina GXL with a recon twin webber, back in the good ol' days, if you get more than this you're doing well :D

Car engines are HC/high compression, van intended ones usually LC/low comp.

Does the van run ok apart from fuel consumption & what body style is it,the weight & aerodynamics etc usually kill any hope of good mpg in a petrol van.....

Is it fully serviced, may be worth checking ign. timing & c.o./mixture % for best results.....

Hi, Well its a camper van so its especially streamline, ive serviced it myself with all new parts and set the ignition timing, but do iset it @ 6 deg for a van or 8 deg for a car, ive not yet set the mixture im waiting for a bit better weather and use my trusty colour tune kit.

It was originally a 1.6 chassis cab i beleave, before it was converted in 1983 would the axle be sucking the power out?

Set the ignition timing for the engine code of the one fitted, bearing in mind it will be different for unleaded than originally intended.

OHC usually has engine code stamped on webbing where gearbox bolts on 2.0 hc,cortina escort etc usually NE if i remember right.... :?:

i was running a vv it was great ,then i upgraded to a webber twin choke all it done was make a noise and used more fuel !
the vv i was useing was spot on with manual choke conversion !i have it somewere :?
i found the pinto would not pull ,even worse wen i spent loads of money on it, i uped it to hc had the head done ,performance cam ,new hc pistons and it wouldnt pull me out of bed! this is why i went back to the v4 engine! witch seems to pull abit better!

also a decent v6 will probly give you a good 15 to mpg ,thats probly what your getting wth the pinto!
what did the mk1 do with the v6 dave?

Well my Mk 1 V6 would prob do 13 to the gallon, and somehow i never minded as it drove lovely and flew uphill no matter how steep, even towing a caravan. It also had overdrive so it could cruise at 70 and i often had more out of it on overtaking, or when i just wanted to get home quicker! Mind you, im sure it went into single figures when i did that! I had the carb rebuilt on that and rejetted for more economy and fitted a Kenlow. Did these things make a difference...I doubt it. but what a beautiful van. W00 578L where are you now?
