It must be 'real' as he's refered to the blades being all in the same direction. As he's paid £700 for 'grass' you don't get that effect on artificial turf at that price, you'd get greengrocers matting, I've had a few samples of artifical turf, it's plasticky and lurid green even when claimed to be natural and indistinguishable from the real deal. So it has to be 'real' grass sown into matting like you would do green roofs and walls with, as it's the only way you can stick it to a steeply inclined surface. Conventional turves are rooted in a sandy loam and wouldn't stick vertically, they would tear with their own weight. Grass matting could exist with sufficient air moisture and you can chemically inhibit growth, although it is likely to be a dwarfing variant of grass seed that won't need cutting.

Astroturf comes in about 6 different shades of green, besides the other colours in the range. I did see a mini at a show with grass growing on it, but it was only on the roof and bonnet
