It would be a lot to pay for a different badge on the back. Perhaps buy a T260 and then a T280 badge from the spares department - or is it the T280 badge that costs GBP500?

I think that is the point of the different nomenclature: T260 = 2600kg GVM, T280 = 2800kg GVM.
The specifications are here (although out of date, like many other things on the Ford website):

Best thing to do is look at a 260 VIN and a 280 VIN.
My 280 has a GVM 2640kg, GTW 3500kg, Max front axle 1400kg, Max rear axle 1550kg.

T280 with a Gvm of 2640kg, there were complaints made and Ford agreed to align these figures so that on later vans the T280 actually had a Gvm of 2800kg. There was an article about this in one of the commercial vehicle magazines at the time but I can't remember which one, hope this helps

Even more interesting! You would complain if you paid extra for what you thought was 2800kg GVM and it turned out to be only 2640kg, with a lower payload than expected. Assuming that Ford sorted out the anomalies as mentioned above, the basis of my question is: what do you get for the extra £500?

The Axle's will be rated higher on the 280
