making keys from locks???

Postby tuscan440 » Fri Apr 14, 2006 4:50 pm

evening all been a long time since i last posted but ave been at uni for last year and so the time has come to get my mk2 back on the road again for the summer after last years disaster. anyway its been in a lock up for the last 6 months, my brother arranged it but being my brother he has also lost the keys.unfortunately i spare set went missing with our last outing with the RAC man!
the question is do i have to totally replace all the locks and ignition (and fuel cap) or can i get keys made for the locks. ive heard that there is a code system that Fords stamp on their locks so you can have keys made in an event like this. anyone kno this is true or just a load of tripe???

 will this ever stop?? Now, keys. If you can get a Mk2 key, you can take out the barrels (a Haynes manual is good for this), and make the barrel work from the key you have. You can then have more keys cut. I don't fancy your chances of getting any more new barrels with keys, unless they turn up on ebay or get a full set with the handles and keys from a scrappie. Either that, or forget the Ford locks altogether and fit secondary deadlocks.

i kno tell me about it Fred! thing is i put more effort into the van than anyone else yet all the cock ups are down to other peoples incompetence! well thats good to know, but hopefully i will be able to find the keys eventually.thinking of hot wiring the van, moving it to mine and do the necessary work to get her through the MOT before i start thinking about the locks.
my brother is a royal pain in the arse for things like this and somehow manages to make it my fault even though he hid the keys somehwere at the lock for 'safekeeping' *slaps forehead*. will have a browse of the forum and see what people have been up to but rest assured i'll be posting a few more times in over the next few months!!!

Incompitence? Tell me about that too. Carefully take off the plastic steering cowling. If the steering is locked, you will have to drill off the sheer-off bolts that hold on the steering lock, they can be replaced later. To the left of the steering lock barrel is the ignition switch itself. Seperate this from the steering lock, and you can start the engine by putting a screwdriver (flatblade) into the slot and turing it. I'm not posting any secret information for thieves to see here, it's such old news I don't think there is a van thief over 30 who doesn't know how to do this, only thieves are not so careful.

if you can get the drivers side lock out, you should be able to get a key cut from the lock. Costs around £20 from my area (Heathrow)

I have never heard of this with a Mk2. Are you sure?

That's worth a go, never liked having more than one door lock key for one van.
