Rear Bearing Nut.

Postby imustloverust » Wed Aug 27, 2008 3:56 pm

Hello everyone,

I decided to replace a rumbling bearing on my 82 mk2 with type 34 axle today. I quickly ran into a problem with removing the nut that holds on the bearing. I know i should have a special tool but it costs 5o euro from e-bay and the haynes manual suggested the use of a "suitable drift". It would appear my drifts (cold chisel, large screw driver, metal bar etc...) are unsuitable. Anybody out there have any luck using a "suitable drift" and if so please let me know how you did it? Cheers all!

I've the same problem - no special socket.
1. I'd prefer to use the special tool - does anyone know where I can get one?
2. the manual says use a "soft drift" - but some people have posted "bigger chisel/ hammer" - do i really have to do this? It's very tight - no chance it's a left hand thread is it??? (Near side rear wheel bearing)

yes 1 side is left hand thread .......... n/s one :!: way to check is imagin the nut is loose and the wheel is turning if it will undoo it then the thread will be the opposite way

i'd use a soft (metal) drift the softer the metal the harder it will be to come off but the less damage it will do :D

the proper socket i got off ebay it was an old stock one - at the time baconsdozen tried to find them but they are no longer manufactured - so if you get the chance of one grab it :!:

Since looking for those sockets (which must have been a few years back because I've forgotten all abou it,) I've found somewhere prepared to make sockets in small batches.
What size are these ones?
