Corrosion - any advice on buying a van?

Postby alice » Mon Apr 27, 2009 7:37 pm

Hello everyone
I am new to this forum and would like to ask if anyone can offer any advice.

We are thinking of buying a 1990 ford transit camper for around £2K. Diesel, 60K miles, seems in good nick.

Checked the MOT history online and it seems in 2006 the MOT failed for excessive corrosion on the rear brake pipe, front out rigger suspension component and seat belt anchor.

There have been no problems recorded with corrosion since, so presumably its all been welded and sorted. But is this an indicator of ongoing problems with corrosion do you think? There's not much observable rust other than would expect.

Appreciate any help. MAny thanks

sounds typical for a transit - but some vans do suffer from localised corrosion, what i mean by that is they can be bad in certain parts and req. welding but the rest of it is still perfect (or very good) - have a good look round and ideally take somone with you who knows transits and get underneith and give it a good prod - if its solid then what you've mentioned is nothing to worry about :D
