Postby paj » Tue Apr 25, 2006 4:40 pm

in process of replacing discs but having a bit of trouble getting end float right on wheel bearings, i understand there should be a slight bit of play on the wheel when i rock it. would appreciate any advice

there should be a small amount of endfloat - tighten the bearing as tight as you can spinning the wheel as you do - this will ensure the bearing is seated correctly! then back it off till you feel some endfloat :!: - as little as you can if you understand :? but there should be some there!!! :D

The simplist way to do it is spin the wheel and tighten the nut, give it a good tweak, but don't go mad on it.

Then back the nut of a quarter of a turn and spin the wheel, then just take up the slack on the nut....just the slack!

You should be able to feel a slight amount of end float in the wheel when you grip it at 12 and 6 oclock and rock the wheel.

if you get it wrong, you'll find out soon enough as the wheel bearings weld themselves to the spindle

in the haynes manual it says to turn wheel in both directions whilst tightening the hub nut at 40nm then turn back one "flat", i have tried to stick to this but am having to guess the nm bit!. so i dont think i have overtightend them. i think maybe best to have them checked at a garage, never got to grips with wheel bearings
