luke somehow we need to mod your gadget as it wont touch the drop arms without the lugs, ie erly 70,s ones only the ones with the lugs on it will work ,but what a gadget! 8) 8) 8) 8)

yes but you'd need the steering lock off (ie key turned) as it sits in a groove on the column - if it doesnt have the key then you could undo the key barrel there are 2 shear bolts but ive removed them before with a chisel and a bit of patience :D

well ive got the one on my 1970 firevan to split soon so looks like gadget mk2 is on the way :lol:

thanks i'll bring My keys, and a drill(may drill the heads off?) for the lock, as it was locked.. and i doubt they have keys.
might have a cold chisel somewhere.

if you are going to remove a box from a scrapper then yes cut it out! :wink:

o.k. before you dismiss your box check this::: a lot of mot testers condem these boxes on play wrongly,
they are only accurate when at dead centre, either side of this you can expect play!! especially on full lock,
the main failure on these is pitting in the shaft where the rollers run and top and bottom bearings due to lack of lubrication, there is a filler on the side of the box ,its a plastic bung, regardless of what any textbook says
this should be filled to the brim with hipoid 90 gear oil, also removing the outer column and pouring oil downwards on the inner shaft to lubricate the top bearings is prudent, they always fail for the same reasons
lack of oil and not really strong enough for the job, especially if the van has seized kingpins,flat tyres or bad ball joits , all of these hammer the box,

if you do end up changing it, buy one with the droparm still attached, get it removed by a press, dont!! bang it off for god sake!!! get burning gear and blow the old drop arm off the van, the rest is easy peasy.

thanks

i did remove this steering box and column from the wreckers yard.

been a while now but, lucky My key with some jiggling turned the ign lock to accessories to push the relase pin and remove the lock barrel.
then i undid the steering wheel, binlker, wiper and light stalks with the plastic surrounds. undid the Uclamp at the box end and slid the outter steering column out after undoing the bracket.
the steering box was simple. i was lucky that My ford Falcon pitman arm puller fitted the transit drop arm good enough and after removeing the nut holding it on. the puller easily removed it from the splines(much easier than i have had in the past with the falcons)
undid the mounting bolts and slid the steering box with shaft out under the front of the van.

was easy. supprisingly.

i will be oiling it up before fitting.my original box does have issues

i just made one of these on sunday as none of the pullers i had would even tickle the arm on the pas box i recently got. (huge thanks to luke for his help.)

i put up a pic when i get chance.

heres mine, im hoping it will grab the standard mk2 drop arm by the lugs on the side. worked well grabbing the whole of the mk3 arm. will find out soon.

this is very interesting i have some play in mine resulting in mot faliure. so it may not need replacing??

Just try tighten the bolt that is on the engine side and then tap the pitman arm, (that 9inches rod conected to the box shaft) with a hammer to the inside so the setting could take place.
If you have many play I think you need to eat spinach like Mr popay. :lol: :lol:
Have you checked weather the loose is coming from any of the ball joints?
