Gas conversion

Postby Kevin Hawkins » Sun May 07, 2006 5:36 pm

Has anyone had a gas conversion done to a pinto 2 litre engine? If so, how many miles per gallon does it give, has it improved or decreased the performance/acceleration, and finally, how much did you pay.
Any information much appreciated.
Thanks for all the help re the power assisted steering.

kev the problem with gas converting is you have to do allot of miles to get your money back, the trusty pinto will be ok on gas but you will get a slight decrese in power! but hardly noticable! if you were to get the conversion cheap then its not a bad idea but to pay £800 to £1000 it will take sometime to get your money back!
the disadvatage of haveing gas is filling it up ,it seems to take forever and on a windy rainy forcourt it can be unpleasent! :? and also you get a hand that goes num holding the button in! :? but lpg is great if you were lucky to buy the vehicle with it allready on!

I run a LPG converted car, and my van is being done very soon. I find them to run alot smoother, and quieter. Mine Mk3 van was converted to gas, it did about 20-22mpg when it was a pinto, I changed it for a 3.0 V6 engine, and still got around 15-18mpg.

The cost can vary, about £1000 is the nomal for a carb'ed car. Have you thought about fitting a kit yourself? You only need a basic kit on a pinto, can probably get all the needed parts for £300-400, then, just get it safety checked which is about £50

wasn't one of the main headaches with this "where to fit the dam tank" due to regulations and something about it needing to be a certain height from the ground ?

You will find that LPG powered engines do less mpg than on petrol. rough guess he is getting 20-22mpg on petrol.

But, saying that gas is half the price of petrol. It works out that he is getting 30-32mpg for the same money. Which isn't bad for a petrol van :)

The econmy all depends on how the gas con is set, I know my car (2.9 24v Sierra XR4x4) is about 1 second slower to 60 (6.5 on petrol vs. 7.5-8 on gas and it will pull 130+ on lpg (145+ on petrol) Driving like that, I emptied the tank in 200miles, normally I get about 350miles on the tank full.

There is an add-on for basic kits, uses a lambda senser in the exhaust (if you haven't got one, they are easy to fit) this can help. I was told that a non econ-net equipped R/Rover did 12-14mpg on lpg, after, it would return 18-20. I'm going to be fitting one of these to my van.

I wouldn't advise turning the screw down to much, you run the risk of damaging your engine, LPG burns hotter, so does a weak mixture. I have seen some real bad engine damage caused by weak LPG settings.
