Starting problem.

I`m sure i`ve read about this problem somewhere else on here but can`t seem to fit it again.

When I come to start the van first thing in the morning or after its been stood for an hour or so, when I crank her over the engine fires , runs for a couple of seconds then dies. On restarting it takes about 4-5 seconds of cranking then she fires and runs fine after that. Seem to remember someone mentioning about the fuel draining back out the pump into the tank.

Oh forgot to mention, its a 92` 2.5Di.

Sounds like air in the system, it could be from a joint in the pipes, or a seal inside the pump. The air settles when the engine is off, and needs to be bled out by cranking over.

cast an eye over the leak off pipes first - make sure they're all in good nick - also make sure filter is secure and the seal is in good condition or if it's not been changed for a while it's a good opportunity to bung one on

Ok then if there is air in the system whats the easiest way of bleeding the fuel line.

obviously its bleeding itself when you start it, you need to find the cause of the diesel running back

OK, think i`ve found the air leak. The fuel pipe from the fuel filter to the injection pump has a dodgy fitting on one end, its seeping a bit of fuel out on occasions. I`ve dismantled the fitting and wrapped some PTFE tape round the end of the pipe before I reassembled it, the problem nows appears to be rectified. Has anybody got a rough idea of what one of the little pipes costs from Fords, if its going to be a reasonable price i`d rather buy a new one than rely upon a repair.

Haven't got a clue about price of pipe, but the repair isn't a bodge and will probably outlast the van!
