Ignition Warning Light Comes on after 30 seconds!! HELP

Postby Steelsey » Mon Aug 03, 2009 6:40 pm

Hi, my van has been running sweet recently but tonight when I got in the van and started it up as normal, after 30 seconds the Ignition Warning Light comes on and stays on! There is nothing wrong with the van, starts fine, runs fine, all the lights and other electrical components work! Yet if you stop the engine, turn it back on, after 30 seconds the same problem reoccurs!!!

Does anyone know what the problem could be??? is it serious?

I looked in the manual and it says; "if the Ignition Warning Light Illuminate whilst driving, switch off all unnecessary electrical equipment and drive immediately to the nearest expert" All well and good but I couldn't find an expert at 6:30 on a monday evening!

Which light exactly?

Is it the red one with the ( ! ) symbol or the orange one with the engine symbol?

There is a very common problem with the connect that i and many others have had, there is a 3 pin plug that goes into the altenator, the wires (especially the blue 1) are prone to breaking and this causes the battery light to come on. It is a very easy fix, just unplug the nackered 1 and swap with the new 1.Ford sell a replacement loom which i think i paid £13 for from the main stealer. If you have a look at the alternator you will understand what i mean. Hope this helps

Cheers for the advice, I had a look at the connector, gave it a bit of an inspection and couldn't see anything untoward. I re-connected it and the problem still is happening. Was the broken cable a visual thing or a simple matter of replacing the part and hey presto!!!

I tried to trace the loom but i got lost when it all went under the battery carrier plus it was getting dark.

The loom can get internal breaks in the wires. On the Connect it's common for it to be around 150mm back from the alternator multiplug. You'll need to strip back the binding to see that area, and examine the wires closely

The wire can break in a number of places, not just at the connector by the alternator. It's cable tied at a number of points along it's length, usually to tightly and with a bit of vibration, will break.

It is just one option to try first, as Geoff said it could actually be the alternator. I have replaced the one in my 1.8 TDDi Focus twice in 2 years

It is only really the first port of call but this seems to be the most common reason for this problem to occour,i say this as i bought a new alternator at nearly £250 only to realise that a £13 part would have sorted it. I bet you 50p that its the loom!! :D

Thanks for the link, interesting. I took a drive over to my ford garage today and bought the £13 loom. I got back to the van and it wouldn't start!!! Battery was dead. I looked at the loom the guy gave me and it was too short, my alternator loom is part of a bigger loom all together! So I got a refund on the one I bought and asked the guy to look at the loom in my van. He took the part number and told me the bad news that if it is the loom that has failed (which he agreed with you guys that it is a common problem) I'll be looking to pay £580 for a new one

Somewhat taken back I dropped my pants and booked the van in for a £95 diagnostic test for tomorrow! Leaving the van in their car park I set upon my 12 mile walk home in the rain....bugar!

The loom I got for mine indeed had a plug on either end.
If you cut the plug off the opposite end to the alternator, the wires are long enough to bypass the suspect area, which is the clipped positions behind the radiator.
Simply cut the wires on the van loom and crimp connect your new ones on.
Job done £13!
The fact that the battery light comes on after 30 seconds tells me you have the broken wire fault.
If it were the alternator, the light would remain on from start up.
I guarantee this is the fault.
Some people report headlights going dim and bright in rapid succession. This happened to mine. You probably wont have noticed this due to not having them on because its summer.
I bet fords diagnostic shows no fault. You will be £95 down. They will say you need a new alternator and quote you £300.
You will still have the original fault.
I am just trying to save you getting ripped off by Fords.
If you need a new alternator, which you might do, they are new on ebay for around £100. Fitting is an hour or 2.
Let us know how you go on.
