paint colour

Postby jonni » Fri May 12, 2006 9:39 am

Many thanks for the advice guys.

I will check out the paint code. I hadn't realised there were that many different reds.

Anyway rubbed down a patch of rust till it was all gone, then red primer then pepper red then a rub over with 1200 wet and dry to get the sheene off then two coats of clear lacquer. Colour is way too light, the van is a really dark almost metallic maroon but this pepper red from halfords is more like a Cherry colour. :o

I will let you know how I get on with the vin plate.

Many thanks

Your best bet is, go to a paint mixing or suppier place and get the van colour chipped matched. All the places I know are willing to make-up aerosols of the correct colour for you.

As for paint codes not lying, thats a joke! on both my car and my Mk3, I had got the paint according to the code, only to find they don't match. The code was correct, but there are different shades. Take diamond white, one code, think there's 13 different shades!

Best one I ever had, my Mk2 escort was laraul green, got the paint back, it was a pea green! They wouldn't except it was wrong untill I took the car down to show them. Turned out, it was 6 month only colour, Ford changed it, but gave it the same code.

Spooky this.... when I was picking up my daughter from school tonight, a mk 5 non minibus transit drove past in exactly the colour as the one in the picture above. It was definitely a slightly darker red than mine!

paint

Postby jonni » Mon May 15, 2006 8:42 am

Right tried checking the VIN plate and that was no help at all, mine has the VIN number on the dash and there was no mention of ES or otherwise.

Looked under the bonnet and at the front of the engine bay is a plate with the words - Pepper Red stamped into it. Went back to a different paint suppliers and got them to give me their version of pepper red. It's nearer but still isn't right. Worrying thing is that when he went through his book there were about 7 different Pepper reds listed and they are all covered by one touch up paint ???

ANyway, going to take it to a specialist automotive paint place at the weekend and get a colour chip match.

It definitely looks more like the Paprika Red shown above.

The trouble with any Red is that it fades big time, you maybe getting the right red for the van but if you go to a proper paint shop they will do you a match taking into account the fade.
