not sure you do need to take off the banana manifold :? have you got the radiator out and the front slam panel off (slam panel is the bit the bonnet shuts onto) :D

Yes Luke, this is the stage I'm at... note to self and any other female users - NEVER attempt to remove the bonnet on your own. You'll damage it and just create more work for yourself!

Thanks, it didn't seem so heavy until it landed on my foot. Just a small dent on the bonnet corner, nothing my hammer and a bit of paint can't sort out  Not so sure about Transitmania though, will see how the re-fitting goes...

Those retaining bolts holding the downpipe are stuck. Can't get them off (talking to it and WD40 didn't help) - is there a way around it? What if I undo the whole rusty unit attached onto the engine?

And - the pump again - there is a wire at the end of it which won't come off. The bolt turnes the wole rear rather than undo itself. Is there something I'm doing wrong?

the fuel pump?? the wire will be the stop solenoid should just unplug but if you follow the wires back the whole engine loom should unplug from the van loom in 1 connection :D that way you can leave all the wires on :D

This is what I meant - I know it's not fuel pump, but it's close to it  My brain refuses to work now, sorry... And it's the black rear that spins with the bolt.

And this is the picture of what I call "downpipe" - hope I got at least this one right...

Yes, for now... I don't have enough time to exchange them both.

Done it here.

Also got quite angry with the PS mount...

And now I'm out of ideas on that pump and THIS, what is it? Does it need disconnecting? I'm sure it's something to do with fuel, but how on earth am I supposed to get there?

YOu do need to disonnect it, its the lift pump!

There are two little tabs on each pipe, just squeeze them and pull the pipe at the same time, they come off dead easy :D

Having just pulled a banana engine out of a mk5 this evening:

Yes it is possible to remove complete with the manifolds/pump/gearbox attatched
and that last picture is the lift pump that draws fuel up from the tank and supplys it to the high pressure pump.
Some people are like slinkies, not really good for anything
but they bring a smile to your face when pushed down the stairs.

Thanks guys! And what about the fuel filter. Haynes says to "disconnect the fuel pipes at the fuel filter) do they mean where they come out of the filter or at the back - where they go in? I'm completely lost here. Wildy - did you take any pictures by any chance?
