2.5d on 3 cylinders

Postby gazza » Wed May 25, 2005 2:50 pm

right heres another tip for you all, every now and again my 99 transit would loose power and run on 3 cylinders, it would clear after a while tho, the last time it did it was just before porlock hill in north devon, lucky it cleared before the hill  , had a thorough investigation and couldnt find the usal air leaks in fittings / pipes, :? i then purchased a ford tech cd off ebay just out of intrest realy, on it i find a section on 2.5 d tranys with "intermitenet power loss and misfiring" it turns out it is to do with the leak off rail, standard they are plugged at no 1 injector and connected to the tank return at no. 4 injector, to give a reserve of fuel higher than the highest point (no.1 injector) and to stop air getting in you have to swap the plug to no. 4 injector and the return to the tank to no. 1 injector, you will need 700mm of leak off rail pipe to connect no. 1 injector to tank return, clip the new piece of pipe higher than no.1 injector and hey presto no more reduction in performance, this mod cost the grand total of £1.00 for a 1 meter length of pipe from my local motor factors and 20 mins to make a neat job of it. once you have done it take the van for a quick spank down the road then get a beer for a good job well done. if it misfired and didnt clear just crack off the union on no. 1 injector whilst the engine is running untill all the air is out and it runs sweet again

My '99er no turbo has the back as well form the 4th injector.
Tell me, did you have a great perfomance difference between winter ( cold dry air ) and summer ( warm to hot air with often high humidity ) ?
I think i can tell the felt difference at least between 5 to 10 hp's.
Do you think that could be the leaking problem as well in addition ?
Greetings from bavaria.

Cold air will always give better performace as it can expand more.

High performace and large diesel engines will always cool the air first.

Well Mate,
i know that behaviour but i discribe the difference like
Irschenberg ( well known german autobahn hill )
Summer max 3.gear with about 60 km/h
Winter easy 4. gear with about 85 to 90 km/h.
I think that difference is about to much to cause only from the
colder air, it must have a second reason which i'm searchin' now for
about 3 years :?

everything from a 50cc moped to a 2.5d van will feel better with a cool dense charge, what you are trying to avoid is a sick running motor! diesels dont take kindly to air in the high pressure lines!, have you had the same probs i encountered? my mate also has a 99 van that does the same as mine did before the mods

Hello,
well the "Irschenberg" isn't a monster in attitude but a b*stard with a continuing raise cuppled with curves. So the "thin" air above is not realy a problem
You've asked if i had same problems like you had. Mmmh can't realy tell, if i loose a cylinder when i am allready with about 3500 rmp on the way and just feel a leak of power under the throttle i think i could not tell it is exactly only running on 3 feet at the moment.
Anyway i will change the leaking tube no matter if it showed up or not, at least to prevent of any upcoming trouble.

Greetings
Josef
