And so it starts.............. pics added 19/10/09

Finally made a start on Minnie (the exec the wife has been trying to scrap for a year now  ) Rang round for quotes for repairs to the bodywork, welding, new indicator, 1 new tyre and a full respray......... not much change out of 3 grand!!!! Anyway due to the wife being 10 days from dropping number 3 I am doing everything but the tyre and the welding!!!
Started the chipping away of surface rust yesterday which left me with a sieve!!!!!! the area behind the rear arches literally disintegrated due to the previous owner thinking that a van made of putty must be better?????? The sound of my wife laughing and the next door neighbour bringing round a number for a scrappy they know was not helping to be honest BUT I WILL NOT BE BEATEN!!!!
So bearing in mind I cant weld I thought sod it...... good old fibreglass will do the trick!!!! Took me 4 hours to get it right, 2 hours to fill it to the right levels and sand it to the right shape and to be honest...... happy as a pig in!!!!!

As of 8pm tonight she is in primer from the door runner down and looking straight......... went to the spray shop and matched the 'bronze' colour so admired last year....... turns out the 1990 bus with the bronze paint is actually wearing 1999 charcoal grey???????

Finally, will post pics tomorrow but there is a moral to taking all the abuse of her indoors without biting.......... cos I went shopping and bought a full paint spraying kit!!!!! Compressor, guns, sanders and pipes!!!!!! The moral being...... if the hubby loves his transit....... dont laugh when he messes it up!!!! and Dave....... the legendary skull trims are now a 'shadow' grey with about 5 coats of lacquer!!!!! looking good!!!!

OK well the area around the rear arch more or less crumbled away on contact so thats been fibreglassed, filled and sanded before being put in primer, the actual arch has been ground down since these pics and a new edge welded and it looks ok to be honest. The patches were primed as in the pics and after sanding the whole side is now keyed and primed.
Tomorrow I break open the new spray kit and take my first punt at spraying..... am absolutely bricking it!!!!!!! Still, the bus is only worth a few hundred as a spares donor as it stands so what do I have to lose????? If anyone has some hints and tips I am all ears!!!! Plus how do I get the glue/tape used by the previous owner to hold the trim on???? Hot water is taking an age!!!!
The wheel trims were a happy mistake 8) I rubbed them down and used a chrome spray and they came up looking very bling 8) I thought hmmm.... need to protect that finish if I can so used a clear lacquer ..... BIG BOOBOO!!!! Apparantly clear lacquer reacts with chrome spray and the result was a shadow grey colour which lets face it is as unique as the colour of the van and it goes quite well!!!! Once again thanks to Dangeeeerrrooouuussss Dave for the trims!!! They now have reflective red eyes so reeeeeaaaalllllyyyy corny but I like them!!! each to their own.
Like I said earlier, first attempt at spraying topcoat tomorrow so fingers crossed and advice gratefully received....... more pics tomorrow!!!!

I can never be sure if people are being sarcy when they say they like them!!!!

I was given these by Dave (Dangeerrooouusss) about 2 or 3 years ago as they were surplus to requirements for him and if i am honest I LOVE THEM!!!!

If you search his posts or search skull and crossbone trims on here you will find the thread. If I remember rightly they were $60 for the set. They were supposed to be chrome effect but as I said above I think I have had a 'happy accident' when they turned out this colour 8)
