Remapping

Postby Helloern » Wed Nov 25, 2009 9:37 pm

Hi All, I have a Mk 5 Tranny (smiley) 2.5 turbo diesel Autosleeper campervan with auto gearbox, which runs out of puff going up hills. It has 60k on the clock and has been serviced with intermediate oil and filter changes. I read all this stuff about remapping the ecu. being simple by someone plugging into the system. Does anyone have any experience of this, and what are the plus's and minus's. Presumably any increased oomph is through higher rpm, and has got to be paid for by increase in mpg, even though most claim an improvement in that also. I'd be grateful for any info.

then a quick use of the search button (top right each page) should find the last few times folks have asked about it :)

had my march 1998 diesel transit turbo rechipped (wow) td LCY 150 LWB / bhp 100 autosleeper legend motorhome which i pull a smartcar + trailer with its now like s**t off a stick at pulling the car and trailer . it felt smoother , sounded smoother now all i need is a intercooler to improve it that bit more.
cost was £350

ANYBODY KNOW WHERE I CAN GET A INTERCOOLER FOR MY YEAR OR ONE THAT WILL FIT IT ?.
anybody got a photo of where it sits on a 98 model ?

it was done locally at bishop auckland (co durham) by

Hi MickyMoor, did the boost in power cost you fuel or do you get more mpg?

got about 5 mpg out of it but like you it was when i was hitting banks with the smartcar and trailer on that it went flat.what a difference power wise it makes you dare not put your foot to the floor as it takes off and as you will know my autosleeper legend is a 3.5 tonner.

Another 5mpg would be very welcome as well as a boost in power. Just got to sort out which is best to go for, 'chipping,' remapping, or a Tunit add-on box. All confusing for the likes of us who grew up before ECU's! A pity Which hasn't done a comparison and explained it all. Maybe Clarkson and his mates on Top Gear would serve us road users better by checking out such things rather than some of the useless pranks in my opinion they get up to! Maybe I'm too old to understand!!

You have to be careful with tuning boxes - if its something that just plugs in and you forget about it its likely to just be a resistor in a box!

Tunit boxes (proper ones - read reviews etc) are pretty good

BUT the best thing is to get it remapped by a bloke with a laptop - they can get the optimal settings for YOUR engine. Martynx on here might be able to do the ECU your van has

depends on what year your van is to what you can get done to it , mine is a march 1998 so had to be remapped.
guy had to put a new chip in it thus the £350.

Hi Mickymoor, did it take the guy long to fit the chip? My van is august '97 so I guess it's the same engine 2.5 turbo?

I was hoping there'd be more replies! Surely there must be more of you out there with experience of remapped Trannies. I would like a little more power for going up hill, but am I being naive to think it isn't at the expense of poorer mpg? I know that the remappers claim better mpg, so why isn't there more enthusiam on here? :?
