Mk7 jack

Postby poolie » Tue Dec 22, 2009 5:10 pm

What use are they :?:

Nearly got wiped out today trying to jack van up after i had a blow out on the A66

When i was trying to jack it up at the jack point, jack kept sliding twisting etc.. in the end i flung it in the hedge and drove 5 mile on a flat before me or my family got killed

Oh and the wheelbrace isn't much kop either. :(

i havent found a jack for a vehicle that is any good yet....

i have a £19 trolley jack in the van and a proper wheel brace with me,,,, and the spare wheel carrier is well lubed too....

bugger that you had to drive on the flat though,,,, new tyre now then. Good choice to get off the road too. :)

Poolie,
the Transit jack is neither use nor ornament  When you've calmed down a bit, get the spare off the van & resign yourself to carrying it in the back, where you can get at it quickly. A length of pipe used with the standard wheelbrace should be o.k. Regarding the jack, i bought a heavy duty bottle jack from Machine Mart. Get one that's way over spec, in case you get stuck on a hill & need the extra lifting power. While you're at it, gather a set of jump leads, fire extinguisher, torch & waterproof dayglo coat. Motorway drivers are kinda blind ya know :|

Have a safe & merry xmas.

Oh and a block of wood in case the ground is soft, wheel chocks - you can use wood (more used for trailers though), a tow rope, LED headtorch, shovel, broom, work gloves, rags, paper towel, water, ice scraper, spare bulbs & fuses.

Small toolbox with basics like spanners, few sockets, tape, cable ties, screwdrivers, torx bits, adjustable wrench, pliers, knife etc is useful too

Also if you breakdown in a dangerous place or have to change an offside wheel right next to traffic you can get the police/HATO to come out and warn traffic, that's what we pay them for :)

I wasn't being silly

Given the choice of waiting 2+hrs for a patrol or being back on my way in a few mins, I know what I'd go for :)

with the stadard jack the only thing i find awkard is its a bit tight to wind up but still pretty strong thing compared to some jacks you can get.
BTW is there tool for winding jack up cos ive only ever had the jack and wheel brace. then have to use a screwdriver to wind it up.
i find the spare wheel hanger not too bad.
as for the sprinter bottle jack being good, what about the wheelbrace you get  its about 4''s long.
i take it mk6 & mk7 jacks are identical :?:
i thyought MK7's have a bottle of emergency tyre weld stuff anyway :?:
