Turbo ?

Postby geoff99 » Tue Jan 12, 2010 4:18 pm

My transit 75ps mwb 2001 started making a rattling noise when accelerating ,on checking the engine I couldn't see anything loose ,I then checked and added some oil then after driving a mile blue smoke bellowed out of the exaust ,I drove to the garage and it started to accelerate without me touching the pedal with even more smoke coming out when I removed the key it still carried on running ,the garage has changed the oil but it is still the same ,any ideas?

a blown gasket is mainly labour charges , a blown turbo you can get a second hand one for about £50 but if its a hole in piston your looking a fair whack of money , i think it the latter cause a symptom of a piston hole or crack is the engine running on after key has been removed , a blown head gasket usually gives off white smoke and i dont think would run on after key has been removed

Hi Dean,

thanks for the reply ,if it is the latter what would be a ball park figure and how long would it take to get fixed.Has this be caused by putting in to much oil in?

what do you call to much oil ? cause a bit over the maximum on the dip stick aint goin to do anything ,if it is the piston or anything really and you get it repaired by a ford dealer your proberly looking over a £1000 and they would have it a few days , a diesel specialist would be a fair bit cheaper on labour but i am not sure of the price of pistons , has your management light started flashing ? , if so get it code read ,

if you go on the section mk6-7 third gen transits , scoll to bottom of page type in "cracked piston" in search, scroll down to engine goes bang by corishpasty , they have same symptons as you

Hi Dean,
thanks for the quick reply I didn't put to much oil in but the readings on the dipstick weren't consistent,no lights appeared on the dash and when the first belt of smoke came out there was no bang.
Thanks Geoff ( I will look at the other thread)

Sounds like its running on its own oil, poss due to turbo failure.
Remove rubber inlet pipe onto turbo & check for play/up & down lift in turbo spindle

Ok boys ,
thanks for all the replies, as a novice I didn't realise that the turbo needs clean oil to operate . I have to admit that I have not changed the oil as often as I should have so if I can save anybody on this site any future costs on a new turbo please change your oil every 6,000 to 10,000 miles and when you start your engine allow at least 30 seconds for the oil to flow through the turbo. Hope this helps and saves you money...

Geoff...
PS if anybody has any other experiences of what a novice owner should do with regards to his transit please feel free to post ...

Never rev it and switch off  The turbo will continue to spin, but without any oil to lubricate it's bearings which will lead to premature failure :(
