probablly because of the cold weather mate. the hydralic oil will go thick. so when you lower the body it will take longer for the ram to empty of its oil
edit ive been beaten to it

Who replaced the pump for you? Does it actually pump down or is it gravity?

Was the oil changed at the same time? Has the pivot pins been greased :?:

His may sound a little daft but we had this probleM with a tractor and sprayer arms (hydraulic). It turned out to be a tiny bit of grit stopping one of the return valves opening. I'm talking around the size of a grain of sand! May be something similar?

the valve for the down will be part of the pump and should have been changed with it...

check the hose coming off the tipping piston, and see if your mate had to fix it at any time.... maybe he bodged a few fittings together to get it to go, and there's only a tiny hole for the oil to get through ?

got a photo of the pump ?

what kind of oil did you put in ? thicker hydraulic oil that looks abit like engine oil, or the thin red stuff ? (atf) most tail lifts / tippers need ATF
(automatic transmission fluid)

Evening Gents, I will ask my mate who owned the tipper before me them questions 2moro and get back to you!

I tell you what I did notice though, I was in the scrap yard today and tipped it up with a load on, With the same load on I tipped it back down, It came down a lot quicker with weight on, Where as it should be same speed no matter what.

Also, When you press the tipper up, It dims the main lights on van, Yet when you press to tip it down, The lights stay the same :?:

So it comes down under gravity then, the lights don't dim when coming down because the pump isn't running. It does all point at some sort of restriction on the down hydraulics. As said, even a small bit of grit could cause this.

theres about a 99% chance that the up and the down are on the same hoses etc...

when you press up, the pump pumps the oil through a pipe and into the piston

when you press down, a small valve opens (it's on the side of the pump... stick your hand on it when you press down and you should feel it click) and lets that oil/pressure out again and back into the tank (on the side of the pump)

sounds to me like it has the wrong oil in it, or as above a restriction somewhere....

does it go up as fast as it should ?

or.... if there was any water/moisture in the oil.... it could have frozen ?
