mk5 di alternator wiring

Postby oldskooler » Thu Jan 07, 2010 12:03 am

just a quick question bout the connections. ive just fitted a mk5 di to my mk2 van and im starting the wiring. im using the mk5 battery leads so the main alternator feed is dealt with. the plug on the side of the alternator has two wires which im wondering about as in the mk2 ill just have the one light wire coming from the charge light. could it be that one of these wires comes from the light on the mk5 and the other one runs up the loom and is left to run a rev counter if one is fitted?? or is it more complicated than that?

That's correct, the grey one is for a rev counter pulse and the other one is your charge light :)

I take it, the "charge light" is the battery sign on the dash board?
Mine has stopped coming on and my battery doesnt seem to charge. Can i assume the alternator has died or is there a fuse in the circuit or something else?

change the bulb in the dash , it feeds back through the dash to energise the alt , no light no power to recharge the battery

Take the small wire off the alt and earth it and turn the ign on, if the bulb still doesn't light up try changing the bulb, if the bulb is knackerd the alt wont charge :)

bortaf is correct :!:

This way, you test the "lamp" circuit is working :!:

What's with the subsequent posts to bortaf's :?: :?

From ign relay, then via fuse no6 (@10amps) energises all the necessary accessories including red charge warning lamp, that will come on when the small blue cable is earthed at the alternator end of the circuit :!:

 prove otherwise :!: :D
