DIFF OR PROP BEARING?

Hi,I posted earlier that the pinion bearing has gone on my 96 smiley fave but have just read a thread about a prop bearing going and it sounds exactly whats happening to mine,I have got an axle ready to change the diff but would kick myself if its the prop bearing,how can I make sure it is the diff and not the prop,maybe if i take the prop off the diff and turn it by hand i could hear which one is grinding? any thoughts?

THANKS MARK, THING IS THE VAN WAS PARKED UP FOR A FEW WEEKS AND NOT USED AND WHEN I DID USE IT IT WAS AS IF THE BRAKES WERE STUCK ON AND IT DIDN'T WANT TO MOVE,WHEN IT DID MOVE SOMETHING UNSTUCK AND THERE WAS A VERY SLIGHT GRATING NOISE THEN IT WENT TO BE WELDED AND STOOD FOR A MONTH DUE TO THE SNOW AND NOW THE NOISE IS LOUD AND LIKE A GRINDING SOUND,GARAGE TOLD ME IT WAS DIFF PINION BEARING BUTI NEED A SECOND OPINION,VAN HAS ONLY DONE 160,000 WHICH IS NOTHING FOR A DIFF SO I HAVE BEEN TOLD??

Sounds to me like something else but the prop shafe bearings are easy to check just check what sort of play are in them.

I'm not a mechanic but that sounds to me like possible back breaks

I wouldn't like to say that as def but someone else maybe able to confirm

Hi,
Do what i did, buy 2 bearings ebay item number https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/330372298631 problem sorted. hopefully it will sort you out, at least you will know that bearings will be ok, not a lot of money at £32.75

My bus is a 96 smiley face swb,do I need 2 bearings or one? do I need the 30mm one or 38?

Have a look under your van, it should be 30mm bearings. Thinking about your problem. it could be a liner off a break shoe that is causing your problem, jack it up and turn the wheels to hear where the noise is coming from.

Hi,got it jacked up and drums off,I put it on axle stands and started it put it in gear then got a metal bar and listened to the diff,all seems quiet then the prop bearing....really rough sounding so it looks like its that!!
I notice my prop is bolted at the front and doesn't slide into the box so am I right in assuming I dont need to worry about losing the gearbox oil or am I on the wrong track?

If your prop is bolted at the front to the gearbox you should will not loose any oil, put the drums back on and turn the wheels, it should be a 30 mm bearing on yours.

Sorry about that reply, I better rephrase my last post. If your prop is bolted to the front of the gearbox, you will not loose any oil when you take the prop shaft of. They should be 30mm centre bearings for your year.

If he has an MT75 like most transits (and he should) then yes it does bolt to the gearbox so you don't need to worry about losing your gearbox oil

How you doing mate. Regarding the gear box, i thought that was obvious that is was a MT75 box.
