2L petrol performance

Postby earthman » Thu Feb 25, 2010 3:34 pm

Do you guy's find that an early nineteen nineties 2L petrol will loose speed like a stone when you hit an hill? On steep hills it's that bad dropping from 70 to 40 that HGV's often overtake me.

The van will hit 85/90 on the flats no problem, just done a compression check and all cylinders are fine.

It's a single cam engine.

What van is it in ?,more info may help us help you.
Body style,if its a luton bodied chassis cab or similar then its to be expected.
In fairness i don`t think any of the SOHC petrol lumps will be much cop up hill on motorways.
Especially if loaded !
Give it a service, plugs etc (set valve clearances) then check ignition timing & set co%

Not much else you can do really without doing mods.

Our pinto engined camper doesn't like hills, its ok if you can get a run up but once you loose momentum that its

Even mine will struggle up the steeper hills, and thats a heavily modified Pinto! I can be down to 55mph from 70 on occasion so I dont think you have too much to worry about, just dont expect too much from the old gal  Tourque is not their strongest point :(

OK, I'll have to come clean, it's a VW Transporter high top panel van which is actually a motorhome conversion.

It's the first petrol van I've ever driven, normally drive diesel vans in my work so I was not sure if the slowing down on hills was just a problem in mine, all four cylinders read the same, 150psi so it's healthy in that respect. I service it regularly, change plugs, filter etc. the co mixture is correct, it seems to run fine otherwise.
