hard to get in gear

hiya, i got a 1998 2.5 diesel transit, its getting harder and harder to get it in gear from neutral, ive adjusted the gear cable to the max which helped a bit, so i suspect the clutch is dying. a. would it help to top up gearbox oil, if so where do i put it b. any other clues on wot it may be...

my parants are having the same trouble on there van but i fitted a new clutch cable for them and
the clutch has plenty of life still in it.

On my brother vw golf he had the same problem last year and there was a rubber grommet thing in the gear selector unit that slowly wear down and once it has it dosent move the gear anuff to go in. only a few £ job but i dont no i the transits have the same thing.

Hi, it you`ve run the adjuster nut up as far as it will go then a new cable is going to be needed anyway
sooner rather than later. It could still mean a gear box out job for a load of reasons, but a new cable will
be a starting point. For the oil you may have to remove a gear box cover thats held on with pop clips..or
cable ties if someones been there before and had trouble If I remember taking the top half off lets you
at the oil inspection plug, just fill till it shows here then you know that it has plenty oil. If you want to drain it
and go new oil it will take over a ltr but less than two (unless you forget to put the drain plug back in)
Assuming it`s an mt75 box , all the knowledge on here is to use the specific oil, handily called mt75...e-bay
Halfords or your local factor. If this simple solution doesn't work them you will get plenty help and advice
as you go up the difficulty gears.. so to speak Good luck.

thanx for advise, im in france and its difficult and expensive to get thee right oil specially that its easter w-end, can i use engine oil or is that just 'down and dirty' maintenance.

No, mt75 is almost a true auto box oil, so unless you get a ford dealer or maybe a French factor, the only thing
I would say is use a gear oil maybe fully synthetic 75/90 This might not help the gear issue specially
when cold. This is up to you, but if I was in your place and did this, as soon as I got the chance I would purge the
box and put mt75 back in. This place if full of wiser than me, so I stand to be corrected

if i remember correctly normal gear box oil is too thick for an mt75 , better i would have thought to use auto box oil than hypoid box oil , but having said that you should be able to get mt75 oil anywhere ford uses the box as its a very common box now

Had same prob on me old granny... clutch was fine (for sure, took gearbox off!), the input shaft was very dirty and dry, I imagine it was making the plate drag a bit.

funny dbvm of the 3 grannys i have had 2 used to rust up on the input shaft leave stud for a week and you had to bump it loose
wonder if it is down to the steel used ? !!!
