Postby MICKA404 » Wed Jul 05, 2006 9:41 am

been useing bio now for 2 wks put in £60 so far,I use my van privatly, and ive just started to notice it dose"nt start first go on the key (IT ALLWAYS DID up til l now), is this the start of a problim , and should I stop useing bio now, it started on the 3rd turn of the key this morn and goes fine after that, but im scared i will do some damage to the pump, if i go back to useing straight diesel will that cure my problem ,(it started a couple of days ago) sorry my vans a 02 2ltr turbo 280.

Biodiesel shouldn't really make any difference as the amount of rapeseed oil is quite low.

ok, thanks for your reply, just wondered why it suddenly was not starting on the 1st turn of the key, would i need to change the fuel filter,as ive heard when you first start to use bio it cleans out the system and will clog up the fuel filter,is this true.

You might want to check the glow plugs as these or the fuisble link in the wire could be at fault.

Fuel Filter.

Postby ed4002 » Wed Jul 05, 2006 9:23 pm

Most of the advice I have read has said to change the fuel filter after using biodiesel for a few thousand miles. I also says you should carry a spare.

The reason is that biodiesel moves all the deposits from the fuel tank and fuel lines more easily.

I would change it out just to make sure. I've had diesel engines with filters so full of gunk you wouldn't belive. (and thats with regular diesel).

I've found some great info at http://www.vwdieselparts.com/forum for running Veg oil and Bio-diesel. (if anyones intrested).

Biodiesel is a pain in the backside.

If the fuel has anything more than 5% biodiesel you'll void any warranty coverage on the fuel system...(if it has any remaining)

It has a nasty habit of gumming up the delicate workings of the pump and injectors.

Why? Surely biodiesel is the same as regular diesel, just made from different raw materials. It's routinely sold in France, wether you like it or not.

I agree high pressure pumps are made to very fine tolerances - for the sake of saving a few pence now it's just not worth the damage it could cause in the future - I would never dream of using anything but proper diesel even in my old astravan - your decision

If it contains more than 5% bio, the fuel is NOT the same and the increased warranty rejection rates across europe bare witness to this

I don't make the fuel systems, nor do I dictate policy with regards to coverage on the parts, but I do have to stick to them and enforce them where neeeded.

Ford diesel systems are designed to run on Diesel fuel meeting BS EN590 only, this standard sets the 5% limit for esterified vegetable oil

even at these levels we are having serious issues with diesels which have been run for long periods on this fuel as the build up of gum affects the workings thus reducing their ability to function correctly.
It's not a manufacturing defect and so not a valid warranty claim.

Everything I have read and mind you I have never used Bio Fuel says its cleaner than normal diesel and does not leave gum deposits in fact most of the blurbs say it cleans them away from previous normal diesel use??
