Just Snapped My Cambelt now :-((((((((((((((((((

Postby thedadio » Mon May 03, 2010 9:56 pm

Hi i just snapped my cambelt, heres the story....... Changed my bulbs, used a scarf to hold the bulbs to prevent greasy prints, left the scarf ontop of the engine, started the engine, scarf tangled into alternator belt, p/s belt, then into the cambelt case, then proceeded to tangle into the cambelt and snap it:-(((((( What the hell now???
Ive Managed to dismantle everything. Can anyone tell me how to check if and how much damage has been caused? And how to time it up and install a new cambelt? Im stuck with limited tools, a few spanners and sockets, and a pry bar. Is there anyone in the slough area that may be able to help me for a drink? thanks

Oops!

I guess we are talking about a 1.5di engine?

The good news is that its highly unlikely there is any major damage. Take the rocker cover off (lots of 10mm bolts) and you will see the extent of the damage (broken rockers and bent push rods)...

To put the new belt on you need timing pins, these can be obtained for about £15 from a motor factor...

yep i have the new refined 1.5 di LOL jk, thanks for the prompt reply, i remember reading about broken rockers now, is there a timing mark for the crank pulley? should i remove the rockers and pushrods when i realign the cogs?, hopefully this will be a blessing as my water pump has needed replacing since i got the tranny, where the cambelt snapped i could see rust on the metal banding, and it needed a service anyway lol.

p.s. Im cheap, so can i get away second hand pushrods and rockers if needed?? thank you so so much

You`ll need an 8mm, 10mm and 12mm bolt to put in the timing slots in the cam, the fump pump and the flywheel. Once these are in place you can slip the timimg belt back on and tension it up. If nessesary you can slacked the bolts on the pump pully to get the alignment spot on. I`ve had 2 cambelts fail on me in the past and the only damage was a set of bent pushrods.

There is a hole just above the starter, which takes the flywheel locking pin :D

Above the starter motor there`s an access hole for the pin to go in the back of the flywheel to lock it in place, you might have to turn the crank around (Clockwise) with a spanner to get the pin to line up.

Just been outside and grabbed a pic for you.

Mine has a little grey plug in the end, it might have one on yours or it may be missing.

hello just another update. Thank god my dad collected so many tools, ive managed to scavenge around in the garage and found most of the bits i need, other than the vice to unbend the rods, anyway, water pump is off, old tensioner is off, engine is timed up with 20 year old rusty drill bits awaiting timing belt ( im cheap so where can i get one of the £12 as listed in the timing belt faq? lol, so i just need to do the following, get timing belt, rods, pump, put them all in , then work out how to do the valve clearences. anyway thanks very much so far for all the advice, the most ive ever done to an engine is change the head on a 1.3 OHV engine but that was a piece of pee as there was no timing belt involved. Im no mechanic neither.
