2.5d Turbo won't start

Postby calaistt » Sat May 01, 2010 3:29 am

Hi there guys, First time poster..
I have a 95 transit 2.5 turbo, Driving along nicely then water pump belt snaps off with a bang, i instantly loose power- engine only idles now.I roll down the hill and park.Vehicle is towed.Next day i try to start it but it just turns over. From the sound of it the engine it has compression.Continuous starting does nothing- no smoke .If i open throttle to wide open within 10 seconds it tries to fire but never makes it.The EPIC pump was removed and replaced with a bosch mechanical unit over a year ago and has never missed a beat. The pump has power and when i crack the pipe to the injector i get diesel being pump out there.Nothing else looks damaged in anyway. This problem does not make any sense. Can anybody shed some light here

Thanks Oliver

Thanks will check timing, however i tried to start it with a can of engine starter(25% ether) which should give me a partial fire but no luck there.

Not if the cam has slipped - wont be getting enough compression. you may have bent pushrods so not getting the inlet valves opening?

I agree, try straightening them first. I have had success with both Transit and a Land Rover engine that had suffered a cambelt failure.

plenty of di,s out there with cheap parts without compromising on reliability for the sake of low price parts.

Yes you would be silly to compromise on reliability but its a simple metal rod that should stay reliable once straightened.

The Land rover ones were changed as the MOD are a big company and it is good practise to fix properly, the transit was mine and threw its gutts out about 3 months later due to motorway madness at silly revs in a Landy.

I always improvise to check there are no other faults hidden away.

I suppose it comes down to understanding what goes on inside an engine rather than just changing parts as per the book!
I once welded up the cylinder head of a Landrover after it had burned away between the 2 middle pots. It wasnt that I realy wanted to but we were stuck in a field in the middle of Glastonbury festival and getting a replacement head wasnt an option. I ended up filling the finger sized hole with rods then skimming it flat with a 4" grinder, and checking it with a steel ruler. (Did manage to get a new gasket)
The plan was to get the Landy and its caravan a respectful distance from the festival before calling the RAC for a tow home. But the engine was still going strong 2 years later when it was changed for a V8!

Hi again,
I changed all 8 rods-got it all back together and she starts and runs but it does blow blue/black smoke now and has a terrible miss between 1000-2000 rpm.Power is down and boost has dropped from 18psi to about 14 psi. I will take the head off and see how bad the valves are...Oliver

Sorry white and blue smoke... Can't start it cold without some engine start spray.. Turbo is off and when i crank it white smoke from all 4 exhaust ports.
When she is warm it starts ok and will idle perfect- but still white smoke-not as much as when it is cold though...
