My mission to get new project ...

Postby chalkie » Thu Aug 26, 2010 8:56 pm

Travelled 100 miles exactly to fetch her ...

Got to guys house and he said follow him to the van and it was in a field in middle of nowhere with flat battery, now i forgot jump leads and spare battery. Car i went down in had round terminals and van had square but guy who we bought it off gave us a jump start. Then realised had to go 5 miles to local village to tax it, so left 15 yr old grandson guarding running van whilst me and mate went to post office which was closed for half day by just 5 mins :(

So decided was too long to leave lad and went back for him before we went to high wycombe to get tax, well that was the plan. As usual plan went to sh*t, we forget how ro get back to field in middle of nowhere  After an hour we eventually found himn and set of for tax, expecting aggro at post office as was mot exempt and had no proof. No issue they just issued the tax as it said recovery vehicle on log book Woman was more interested in fact that i put different name on log book to my company name and she tried to say i was not insured cos of this so i had to explain log book is keepers info not owners and my company owned it so was insured.

Anyway, we then headed back to van, this was an easier task as i set vans home field to home in sat nav.

Got back, went to start her and battery still flat :( Luckily farger giles arrived and went off i n his tractor to get some jump leads.

Once started we drove our car on back and headed off for home, however ...

... as battery was dodgy decided to fuel up with engine running. :D This changed to sad when we realised fuel cap used ignition key :( so i gets a large screwdriver to force cap off. I succeded but the cap fell apart and the centre went in tank :( This meant that it took for ever to fuel up as was blocking filler pipe :(

Then we heads off and travelled at a steady 70 all the way home and she performed really well. Steering is really light so i reckon she has had a new box. Rattles a bit, not engine but like a loose tinny rattle that i cannot figure out yet.

Anyway here she is:

Chassis is as rotten as a pear and skirs are too. Tools boxes look handy but need a bit of work as does most of her but all in all i am happy ish and cannot wait to get to work on her. :D

So, what are your plans with her then, a little restoration, repair that rare FS bumper 8) and back to work.

Well ... get the chassis welded, remove the rusty steel skirts and rivet some alloy chequer plate in their place, reair or replace winch, get through mot and work it to the ground ...

I like the bumper and reckon i could repair it, however, it might be a bit impractical for my use so if it is rare perhaps i could sell it to fund the restoration :?:

scared shitless how much i will get quoted for welding work tbh, i can weld (if i had tackle that is) but dont think i am good enmough for this job

Work is moving steadily on now and been welding for just over a week.

Did intend removing the back to make it easy, however, the bloodthing would have fell in 2 :(

Anyway, welder is my mot tester so it aint failing on the welding

Whilst doing welding had to remove wheels on 1 side to check why it was wet and needed to replace the driveshaft seal.

Then bumped the one brake pipe and it fell apart :(

Anyway, a few pics of this week ...
