My first Transit: 2004 2.4tdi 90 T350

Postby bam » Sat Aug 05, 2006 11:12 pm

Hello, this is my first post but I am glad to have found somewhere which seems to have such a lot of combined knowledge on Transits - seems friendly too.

Wondered if I might ask your opinions as dealers trying to sell me a vehicle can obviously be trusted only so far :)

I am considering a 2004 lwb 2.4tdi 90 T350 (with about 41k on it) to do freight forwarding with. Being new to vans I am a bit concerned it may be low on power. I don't yet know what I will be carrying but obviously I have to be prepared to go up to the 1602kg capacity, or at least near to it. As far asd my driving style, I'm not a massive power freak and I'd rather hang on to my licence

A dealer told me most 2.4s are 90s as the hire companies, which seem to buy most of the new vans, prefer them as more powerful models tend to "eat tyres and fuel".

Essentially it's going to be a big purchase for me and I'm not sure whether I'm looking at the right vehicle.

Many thanks in advance for any advice you have to give. Much appreciated.

Cheers
bam

hi m8, welcome to the forum.

the 90ps is good enough to shift the gvw up the country at 70 :)

115,120,125 versions do like a drink, 137 doesn't just drink it takes a bath in the old go juice :D

tip, for business use, buy a decent warranty with it, that way if anything nasty or unforseen happens you won't be out of pocket.

Hi, I use a 90 T 350, its fine for power, not mad keen on the hills when
loaded (but what diesel is ?), I often tow a racecar on trailer & with all the associated gubbins (say 1,000 Kgs) she pulls fine.
I got a little black book with me poems in

My 137ps T350 lwb mr goes up hills very quickly, even loaded. But like nighthawk says it likes to drink diesel. Im going to buy some shares in the shell oil company i think.

You only need two tools in life: WD-40 and Duct Tape. If it doesn't move and it should, use WD-40. If it moves and shouldn't, use the duct tape.

i dont think you will go wrong with a 90-350 these are the best engines to go for in the lwb. steer well clear of the 125 and 135 if you have no warranty ,dont no about the 115 but the 90 would be ideal all rounder!

Hi mate
I have an 04 90 T350.Always fully loaded and tows caravans and trailers. No problem at all.To be honest i get the feeling this model would pull a house.
Fine on speed and torque, but does not like hills one bit.Great van you just need to work the box.

all the pikeys down here that dont have fwd have rwd 90ps motors that must say something as they only go for the most reliable vans

thanks very much to all who replied. 90 T350 it is!

Thanks for your leasing suggestion, Motorwise, but as I'm just starting off I think I need to be able to off-load the vehicle (I know that wil be sacrilege to some of you :) ) if things don't work out. I can't really start off with a long contract round my neck.

I shall look into warranties too.

Thanks to all again.

try contacting norflex, they will lease a vehicle with no minimum term, if things go t*ts up you can just hand it back no problem or change it for a different model.
