1st time transit owner - mk5 conversion

Postby Goodomens » Sun Oct 31, 2010 10:53 am

Hi,
just bought a transit to convert to a campervan. Been reading all the info on the forum and its a great help. So as a wee thankyou for all the advice I have taken from here, thought I'd post what I am doing.

First pics of the van

Never thought I'd be a white van man! But, come the spring, will have to have a go at painting it something more interesting. However, first things first. On with the conversion!

Cheers,

Marc.

thanks for the encouragement. Only good thing I have found with the white van is that loading bays are your friend :-)

Dirtydiesel are you planning on posting pics too?

Man have you been busy Dirtydiesel. I have had mine a month and just got the wiring finished.

Anyhow, here is another pic of the inside floor not looking as good as it could.

Image

Have taken the roofrack off to make way for the roof vent at the front.

Image

and am now left with lots of bolt holes in the roof to fiberglass and fill. But, as long as its warterproof, i can get to the exterior in the spring.

Image

I have also started using a mac and everything takes twice as long to do - but its so pretty :-)

I havent fitted the cooker or sink yet, some scumbag nicked tools from the van, me drill, grinder and a box of spanners :| , thats halted things for now, plus I was planning to take the van off the road for the winter but its ended up been my daily driver for now.
Still with plenty of PMA (possitive mental attitude) il have her done and registered as a camper before Xmas :D
Have you got your interior yet? if you can find a cheap caravan you will have all you need from it and a base for a trailer after you strip it!!!

never good when things go walkies. :-(

Am also aiming for Christmas for completion. Haven't got the interior cabinates yet. Am thinking of making them out of ply/wood beams. But not sure yet as still have too many things swishing inside the brain to be sure for now. So far, have managed to fit the roof vent, do almost all the wiring and fit the wood roof and insulation. But its a race against time surely as the days get shorter and the bill gets bigger.
I do like the idea of a trailer, but parking is hard enough where I live without compounding it with more vehicles. Maybe a residential multi-story parking lot is what is missing in my neighbourhood

Planning the second window this weekend so here's hoping that I don't have a rubish bag come end of Friday.

Only thing that is killing me at the moment is the cost of a Smev hob. want something that is flush with the counter, but not at 160 quid!

88euro for 12 months tax, no doe required and we don't have to sign that bullsh@te declaration that we will only use the van for commercial purposes! Somewhere to live if the missus kicks me out! Yes converting to a camper was a good move I think.

I have two windows!!! Its worth it, putting your own windows in - apart from those few seconds between cutting the hole and putting the window up against it to make sure its ok.

It does seem that the race is on then. Who will finish first?

Perhaps to ensure fairness, we should weight each contestants workload. We should list what each of us had to do from the start. I will leave Dirtydiesel or Redcube to start this.

In the mean time, I will stand looking through to the other side and the world beyond. :-)

Just sitting here I cant even remember what I did first! must read over my post and start my list, one thing ive got to do is make sure my van weighs over 3 ton when its finished, we have to pay a duty of 50euro to register it as a camper if its 3 ton or over and its got to be 1.8metres high inside, if its less than 3 ton and less than 1.8 metres inside we pay a percentage of what the revenue decide its street value is!

right then, more pictures.

Had to make a docking collar for the roof vent as the transit has bumps in the roof - corrugated I think it is called.
Image

then make sure it was waterproof - think I like resin apart from the smell.
