Single to double seat.

Postby fedup2 » Wed Nov 03, 2010 1:51 pm

Ive just bought a mk7 130ps magnum grey fully loaded. The only downside for me is that it has a single passenger seat which i really could do with changing to a double.
Thing is my seats are 8 way adjustable seats and are heated.I also have the pas airbag which i assume the passenger seat has a sensor in the seat for.
What options have i got?Can i remove the heating and pads from the single and transfer them?If i was to just remove the seat,i would lose the drivers heated seat aswell wouldnt i?Would i get an air bag light?
Where do the wires for the seats uncouple,i removed the drivers seat at the weekend but couldnt find a box to undo.

Any ideas apreciated

Thanks!

The passenger air bag covers both seats in a double according to the picture in the manual.

You may have a curtain airbag ( for side impact) buit into the side of the seat upright nearest the door. Look for a little label on the seam of the seat back that says Airbag. If you have then I guess you will get the airbag light come up if you disconnect the seat.

Don't think double seat is adjustable or if you can get one heated or with curtain airbag.

Drivers seat heating should still work if passenger seat is disconnected.

If van is brand new I would leave well alone.

The van is a 2007 out of warranty.
I Havnt had too much time to play and look around at stuff as yet but I'm pretty sure there's no seat airbags .
I have both heated seats turned on all the time but the passenger one doesn't get hot,I'm assuming it must be sat in to work.Im going to have to try it to satisfy curiosity,I'm sure it will work.
That must mean there's a pressure pad and heater elements.maybe these could be moved to another seat if it was stripped ball ache but I can't see why it wouldn't work.a bracket would need to be made for the switch.
What options are available in the sport van,is it also just single seats that are heated?
Where does the wiring split,is there a box on the seat or do they split at the other end of the loom?
From what I saw on the drivers seat there's a curly cord and poss a couple of other wires going to the seats.
Thanks Timbo...

Only the single seat is available heated, pretty sure there is a loom connector just under the mat near the seat, no airbags on Transit seats

Thanks for that ake.
Seems the passenger seat heaters not working,so i guess theres no pressure pads or airbag stuff to make things complicated.

fingers crossed the drivers heater will continue to work once the passenger seat has been removed.
it may be that the passenger seat is already disconected as its been out as the amp and satnav unit is under the passenger seat.
At least the job is looking a little easier.
Thanks!

When I say curtain airbags I mean side airbags built into the seat backs. My early mk 7 Tourneo has heated leather seats with them fitted.

Im going to have a go at transfering the heater to the double.Once the jobs done i wont be going back to a single so that looks the best option.
Ill update with pictures when i get the bits and start on it.

Does anyone know if the framework will come off the bottom of the double seat and line up with the box the single is currently sat on?That would make the job even easier.

Ive found good and bad news today.

The good news is my van has seat airbags. The bad news is that not only does it have seat airbags it has a pressure sensor for the airbags and heated seat which makes the double seat conversion a real headache!

When sat in the seat the heating works fine but doesnt work if empty.
I assume ford could turn of the seat airbags if it came to it,need to have a think :(

If the seat fixings are like the MK6 it should be fine, but you might need the stork part for the extra seat belt to fit into and the extra bolt that goes through the plate that holds the middle seat belt into the floor just to keep it all above board cheers.
Can you get it reprogramed at the stealers or else where to sort out the air bag etc?

The frame on the twin seat is part of the seat.

the double will bolt in the same place as the single but as mentioned you may need the bolt to bolt the seat belt unit to the floor, just make sure you disconnect the battery a few mins before you unplug or plug in any airbags...

Also if you arent putting the airbag back in i think you have to inform the insurance.

If ford cant omit the airbag you can get a resistor to go accross the airbag plug terminals which will make the vehicle think that its still there and keep any lights off the dash.... Not sure of the size of resistor required tho.

Im guessing but i feel confident that turning the seat airbags off wouldnt be too much of a problem after all i believe the single seat is an option rather than standard fitment.
If i go ahead with this i will be attemting to move the heated stuff over to the double it would be a shamme to bin it when at the moment it looks like just the airbag is the problem, but then the pressure pad to detect weight seems to be 2 fold.It controls the heater and the airbags, will that affect the heater if the bag is turned off.

Someone must have gone down the route with first hand info??

Wouldn't have thought they had, that's the problem. You be better off doing away with all the passenger seat electrics.
