Getting more torque

Postby downster32 » Wed Nov 17, 2010 8:31 pm

Just been reading around quite a bit, trying to figure out how to get a little more torque from my 2lt pinto engine. Set up as standard but with an weber 3236 dgv carb

Am I right in thinking the following would be a good start;

Kent fr30 high toque cam (or something similar)
Getting the weber 3236 set up correctly
Getting the head skimmed to raise compression
Converting to an electronic ignition
Getting a lightweight vernier pulley

Reckon that should give me a noticable boost in power you think?

Kent fr30 high toque cam (or something similar) Yes very worth the money!

Getting the weber 3236 set up correctly I would have thought it was set up correctly!

Getting the head skimmed to raise compression You dont need to do this, raising the compression is a waste of time when looking for low down torque

Converting to an electronic ignition Has it not already got this??

Getting a lightweight vernier pulley Pointless really, it wont make any difference

The best thing you can do to improve it after the cam is to smooth out all the internal edges on the inlet manifold :!: You can also do the same with the head, cleaning with a stone in a drill all the bad castings, even if you fitted an EFi head its a good idea...

The question I have is how good are you with mechanics?

look at putting a rs 2000 engine in ,other than that have head gas flowed properly and have the biggest valves you can get in,then a high profile cam such as the kent cam you mentioned

Not that good but am learning quickly. Had a mk1 golf i did a lot of basic work on i.e changing gaskets, setting up timing, doing general service stuff so got a basic knowledge, but i'm yet to do any big jobs and to be honest, for something like changing the cam i'd probably get it done professionally. As i understand it it probably isn't just a case of changing the cam.

At the moment i'm gathring info and ideas. Only just got the van so no plans to do anything straight away. Want to research all possible avenuea before i start modding it

If torque is your ultimate goal, stick Di in it.

A bit more torque without breaking the bank is the aim. Surely a di conversion would be far mlre expensive then making a couple of cheap mods to the pinto. Plus i quite like carb'd petrol engines, it's what i'm used to!

If raising the compression by skimming head doesn't give you more torque, then what are the benifits? Just generally more power?

if you port the inlet and head dont do too much just the rough bits

ford heads are notorious for having too big a port to start with , for the 2L engine the best head to start with is the one from the 1.6L E max engine , the port is a much better size for keeping the air speed up in the inlet tract and so makes a better swirl in the head . port the 2L head and the air speed drops so much it bogs the engine as the fuel starts to clump into bigger drops that dont burn as well
