Total lack of power

Postby truckin in a trannie » Thu Aug 03, 2006 11:32 pm

I've just recently purchased a 2001 t260 75ps transit, with 110,000 miles on the clock. everything about it is exectly what i need in a van except the performance. i first took it into a local commercial ford dealer to have a look at and after charging me £200 pounds told me, it doesn't rev above 4500rpm and its the fuel pump that is causing the problem, and they wanted to charge £1450 to change it. I took it to a fuel inspection specialist and they repaired the fault on the pump for £495, but it is still delivering the same performance, so they took it back to another ford dealer to plug back into there machine (again) and still it is showing no fault. It really struggles pulling away from junctions and going up even the slightest of inclines. I am open to any suggestions because even the so called professionals haven't got a clue. Thanks for your time.

Why did you go for the least output engine in the first place :?:
Aren't you expecting too much from a 75ps engine :?:
If it's that bad, could it be a blocked exhaust system :?:

We've got the same van & spec and to say it only got 75ps, it really punches well over its weight performance wise. I've no complaints with the performance. However its always had the best fuel, filters, tlc, etc.

As you don't know its history, I'd start from scratch and slowly replace all the filters, quality ones, no rubbish, oils, plugs, leads, etc. Then I'd put it on a dyno/rolling road for some power tests, this might through up some clues.

There must be something amiss but don't despair, it really is a super van.

I agree - mine lugs around two tool chests, crypton machine and all my stock which is mostly brake pads and batteries - it's carring close to it's limit and it still flies

find yourself a decent independant diesel specialist to look at it for you

I've heard of dual fuel but I didn't think they meant petrol/diesel

I had a citroen dispatch 1.9d before this van and i thought that was slow but this is stupid, i've never caused tail backs like i do now before, not even on my pushbike :) I rarely get into 4th and never in 5th cos i dont have enough speed to do so, if i try it, it just starts losing speed. Im just stuck with it nobody seems to know whats wrong with it. :(

Well, reading your first post again, NO Transit diesel (turbo or n/a) should rev above 4400rpm MAX :!:
It does sound as though there is some sort of restriction
Jack up each wheel and check for excessive binding
I can't (can really  ) believe the Ford dealer couldn't find the problem  unless the first dealer was right about the pump and your pump hasn't been repaired  specially as it made no difference :!: :( :( :(
What was done to the pump anyway :?:

Are the injectors the right ones :?: Or has someone changed them at some point for the wrong ones :?: :( :(

Is the air filter or any of the air intake pipes blocked :?:

Does your engine management light work in the dashboard :?:

Im not sure what was done to the pump, but it was reading some code apparently, and its not now :?
How can i check if the injectors are the right 1's?
I've taken the air pipe off upto the turbo maniford and it didn't make any difference.
I've just checked for the engine management light and don't really know what im looking for. I turned the key and some lights came on but they seem to be self explanatory. fuel, airbag, service, glow plugs, water in fuel, fuel, batteryand oil.

Thanks for your help :)

Sounds like all the lights are working and I presume they're all out while the engine is on :?:

(Oh and by the way you can quote alot easier if you simply click the 'quote' box on the top right of this square box  )

Can you see any numbers on the injectors :?:

This, I think is one for Nighthawk :!:

I won't pretend to be any sort of authority on the subject - but I test drove one particular tipper when I was looking for my current truck, and the performance was dire - it was a LOT slower than my old J reg 2.5 van. I told the garage selling it that I thought something was wrong - and at that point the garage gadgee "remembered" that there was something wrong with the turbo. He said that some signal wasn't getting through to either it or the pump - hence the poor performance. It drove exactly as you described - and I couldn't get going enough to get into top gear either. He did take it to another garage who he said had it fixed before the day was out - but I was buying another truck by that time....

Hope you get it sorted out anyway mate.
