125 T350 2.4 Dura Torq engine problem

Postby bullet912 » Sun Dec 26, 2010 6:51 am

Hi all, Our Transit was sick and i found this forum to be the most helpful.
At least it convinced me that i was looking for an electrical problem with the engine cutting out and power loss (best described as no boost).
I feared taking it to a dealer or 'bad' mechanic that i'd be told "yeah, that's the fuel pump mate".
Sure enough most suspected this and this was always everyone first check.
When you say it is intermittent and quite random, they usually talk along the lines of replacing it anyway.

So eventually i got to a good auto elecy, who reckons he has found the problem (roughly).
He's right.
The problem was just getting worse and worse and more frequent.
Having said that, ocasionally it still had good days.

Turns out there is a communication problem between the pump and the ECU.
He isolated that to the big connector block that plugs in and bolts to the firewall (inside engine bay, top right).
he pulled that apart, reconnected it and the two codes that were absolutely continuously comming up and unclearable went away.
The van drove prefectly for a few days of runs home and test driving.
He pulled the plug again and studied it for faults and could not see anything.

I'm happy with that. It works now and i know the first place to mess with.
Van has been faultless for weeks now.

I thought i'd throw this up so anyone else in the same frustrating shoes might find a bit of hope.
In my research, 9 out of 10 people say it will be the pump and 9 out of 10 times they are wrong and it is a bad connection somewhere.

hope that helps.

Fuel pump EDC problems are very common on the VP44's and the pumps are also prone to failing on the earlier VP30's.
Any good Garage should read the codes and take it from there.
