Will the 2.4 petrol motor fit into a 1989 transit?

Postby Aussietransit » Thu Dec 23, 2010 10:24 am

Hi guys,
The old ice cream van has finally come to a stand still. After spending $3500 (au) on a motor rebuild it went bang again, so now i'm up for a heart transplant.
What I was wondering is would a motor out of a 2004 model ( 2.4 ltr petrol) bolt straight in to replace the 2ltr pinto (RIP)
AND
Should an A4LD have a high stall torque converter??
Cheers Andrew :D

I was wondering that! pintos don't go bang and they cost peanuts to build if they do, even I4s don't go bang unless badly built or do stupid milleages without a timing chain, which from the q about torque converters maybe what you have?
If you really do have a pinto stick with it, they're great!

Either way its an ice cream van in australia? and you relly on it for money? if so I'd stick with standard or lift an entire reliable system from something domestic and well supported to you, in which case what is this 2.4? in the uk we have 2.3 petrols in cars and late vans, and 2.5 diesels and much newer 2.4 disels which are no more reliable or cheap than the I4.

If you can get one I'd go for a 2.5D manual from a similar age van to yours. ( and ear defenders) but only if you had the complete van to make sure you get all the right bits.
