2000 T350 suddenly died

Hi Guys

Recently tanked up ready for a 200 mile run, got 10 miles up the road from home and engine died. Dash indicated glowplug? light on. Turn ignition on now and no warning lights apart from obvious.

Got recovered back to base and it's looking possibly like injector pump but been hearing all sorts of horror stories about having to take it to main dealer 'cos 'they're the only people who can enable it' or so I've been told.
I had a quote for £1350 + fitting (yeah, right!)

Well, being a total skeptic with an absolute aversion to main dealers of any kind, (that's why I also have a 13yr old R/Rover TDi) I figured that there must be a way around this so started searching and ended up here.

Give me a Classic R/Rover and I don't have a problem but to be honest the Tranny (150,000 miles) has never let us down (until now) so have never had to need to start diving into it and freely admit I know nothing about the fuel injection system & associated electronics.

The way the engine suddenly died would maybe suggest more of an electronic problem (or possibly an electronic shutdown to a mechanical problem).

Any tips on where to start on this one would be gratefully received. The only additional info at present is that the recovery guy sprayed some easy-start into the intake and it fired up fine before dying again so it's obviously a fuel feed problem of some type.

Mine did this!!! now I aint saying it's the same problem but the van would start and then die seconds later right? Turned out that the fuel shut off button had popped out and just needed pressing back in. It's located drivers side in the right hand side of the footwell (next to the accelerator pedal). you have to look carefully then when you see it, press it in. It'll take a bit of getting going again but it should sort you out!

The glow plug light on means that the engine management system has picked up a fault. Have you had the fault codes read by Fords yet as it could be a whole number of things.

Haven't had codes read as yet as we're some distance from main dealer but suspect will have to make the effort to get it dragged there at some point.

Fortunate in not having to have it back on road too soon so there's no immediate rush.

Checked obvious things like fuses but all OK.

It neednt be a main dealer to read the ECU chap. Our local garage did ours and im certain it was a lot cheaper than the dealer (£40 including cleaning the EGR valve)

Motorwise - I must admit, the thought crossed my mind when it died but no, it was diesel!

Lee - had a look for that cutout button but couldn't see anything that resembles a cutout button in footwell near accelerator pedal.

DONT KNOW IF IT RAN OUT OF DIESEL BUT IT HAS FUEL NOW.

WAS RECOVERED TO OUR LOCAL GARAGE WHO PUT IT ON THEIR COMPUTER AND SAID IT WAS

EITHER A WIRING PROBLEM
FUEL PUMP
ECM
OR JUST NEEDS RESETTING AT THE MAIN DEALERS.

I think you mean PCM not ECM ?

It seems to me that the Mk6/7 Transits are only any good for the scrap heap, mine has the same kind of problems and is booked into main dealers for Tuesday.

Possible causes I had, were PCM or Fuel Pump ...... Which, may I add, has to be programmed into the ECU ..... Why do they have to make a commercial vehicle so difficult to work on, I just wish I had bought one of the last Mk5's .

Please don't hijack this thread discussing pro's & con's of Mk5's & Mk6's

I still have a dead Mk6 and the fact that Mk5's may well have been better is hardly relevant. I may well agree (200k on the last one) but it 'aint helping me much.
