battery terminals grease or no grease?

Postby dirtydog » Sat Jan 08, 2011 3:19 pm

Ok not directly a transit question but is it best to grease the battery posts/terminals or not?

I was always told by my dad to put a bit of vaseline on them and have also heard of others putting copper slip on them as well.

Just fitted a new battery on my mondeo and daughter fiesta but not greased them this time.

So whats the general consensus grease or not to grease?
If youre a greaser what do you use?

vasoline will help prevent corrosion, thus saving hassle when the batterie needs to be replaced, im sure grease would offer similiar protection . :D

Marks right, battery terminals don't corrode so much nowadays, due to the fact they use less lead in the terminal post. A dab of grease just stops oxide forming between the post and terminal.

I put vaseline on my negative battery terminal. I had white powder forming all over the terminal clamp. I obviously have a seepage from the battery terminal post.
I changed my battery clamp and put vaseline on it and i have no recurrence of white powder. I did this about 4 months ago. The white powder would form in a matter of days too. So it was quite bad.
It's not WHO is right it's WHAT is right.

I don't care what you think of my Tranny. To me she's solid gold.

Clean the battery posts and clamps and make the connections while "dry" then cover in vaseline to stop ingress of water or damp.

The corrosion has gone the other way now on the newer transits , ...the leads get corrosion where they bolt on the starter motor, normally theres the alternator wire and battery lead together and then the solonid wire , dura torqs suffer with corrosion here commonly... use a 13 mm spanner on bat lead remove and clean them up bit of coppergrease , same on solonid wire 10mm spanner this one..... then the earth lead from the battery suffers under the drivers seat but not on the battery end but where it bolts to the metal, clean this up add a bit of copper grease, the negative lead from chassis to starter motor bolt tends to fare ok .. .. so if your dura torq starter justs clicks its not always knackerd ... :D
