Postby davey88 » Sun Mar 27, 2011 3:10 am

Are they legal to use the led 501's as sidelights? Also what kind of bulb will i need for the registration? With my van being ex royal mail mine's is a shutter thus the reggy being on the top. Any ideas how i would change these as one is out the now & its like non standard light & dont wanna muck around & break it. Cheers guys :)

No LED's aren't legal as a retro fit. W5W (501) bulbs fit both parking and number plate.

I had led sidelight bulbs in my old iveco, got them from Halfords (frosted ones) it passed the mot no problems and I never got stopped. Most high range new car are fitted with led number plate lights.
It's always broken! Getting bored of trying to fix it!!!

Why don't you put the METEC 501's in from HID's Direct?.They're a bright white light,(and legal),have a look for them on eBay. FELIXX. :D

Cheers guys. So seeing as the reg lights on the rear are non standard would these just be the same 501 bulbs? Am I best getting the 501's with 4 small leds instead of one? Thanks again

If the lights are non standard then we have no idea of which bulbs will fit them.

There these sort of light fittings

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BLACK-NUMBER-PLAT ... 1c19bcda4f

Will order them anyways if there the wrong bulbs then use em elsewere. Just wondering how I would get the bulb out as there attached either side of the reg plates & there attached to like a metal plate under were the reg is held on. I shall get pics tomorrow when get a chance if that helps. Cheers guys

I seem to recall when I've had lights like that they used "Festoon" bulbs- the sort like a glass cylinder with a terminal at each end that they often use in interior lights.

I may be wrong!

:D sh*t!!,I bet you can see them from the moon!!............... However,on a more serious note tho, regarding the legality of LED lights, could anyone tell me why HGV trailers are now being made, and, re-fitted with LED lighting systems?.If it's illegal, surely they wouldn't be allowed to fit them, would they?. :?: FELIXX.

The lights on HGVs are E approved as a whole unit with LEDs. Transit lights are E approved for using filament lamps, not LEDs, thats why its not legal

I suggest before you buy that number plate light look here .....

http://www.trailertek.com/acatalog/Numb ... ights.html

They are lots cheaper.

If the bulb you are replacing with an LED is a festoon, you will need the length, there are about 5 different sizes. If it is like a normal tail light bulb (one contact and level pins) its called a ba15)
If you are going to buy LED sidelight bulbs 5W5, T10,and lots of other numbers !, get the SMD ones (with the yellow 'square') they are far brighter than the 'ordinary' LEDs.
I have these,

They fill the reflector very well.

Have fun

Thanks Ake, it's the same with the LED DRL's on my van, they're E marked as DRL's.
