Dohc Conversion

Postby Luke » Sat Mar 12, 2005 10:54 pm

Hi Im looking into converting my mk1 to ford 2.0DOHC8V (the late sierra/granada 2.0 engine). I know that the 94+ petrol transits had this engine fitted but there very rare! especially in 'breaker condition'.
So far ive managed to get hold of a pinto to mt75 adapter plate, which i will try to use! but as the starter fits on this i presume i will need a larger flywheel? do i?
also looking at a transit with one fitted as standard they use a different injection system to the sierra, the sierra one is larger and may foul the servo? the scorpio dohc's look like they use the same type injection as the transits!
I also thought about fitting a 2.0 or 2.3 16v scorpio engine (same block as dohc)!

Has anyone done any of these conversions, or driven a dohc transit or any other information, comments about this i'd be interseted to hear!!

The DOHC flywheel is quite different to the one used by the pinto, so you'd be best finding one from a DOHC sierra.

I thought the bolt pattern for all ford 4 pots was the same - so do you need an adaptor ? The MT75 unit from later pinto trannies should work...

ON the plus side, the DOHC makes a good choice, with 110 odd bhp (carb) and 125bhp (injection) as per standard, and a beautiful fat torque curve more importantly. Personally, i'd stick with the carb to avoid wiring nightmares - using the injection inlet cam (higher lift) and a little alloy fabrication to fit the 38DGAS from a capri in place of the pierburg, you should easily see the 125 bhp of the injection engine, maybe more.

Scorp 2.3 engines would be very nice - but use the later ford EECV engine management system that has the embedded "safeguard" immobilisation system - which is near impossible to get round. Unless you're into megasquirt/megaspark thing or have bottomless pockets for aftermarket management, then the 2.0 is the better option.

Cheers pinto! i will need an adapter cost the tranny mt75 wont bolt up to the dohc block :( the later pinto mt75 transits use one!

Hehe wiring nightmares are my speciality  - but i'd agree it would be easier to get it running on carbs!

do you know if the 2.016v scorpio engine have the same system or is it just the 2.316v?

I think the 2.0 16V as fitted to the scorpios was EECV / Safeguard too :(

There is one possibilty, which is the ECU from the 16V Escort RS2000 - as there are a number of sierra dohc/ RS2000 hybrids in existence - the block was common, so the RS head bolts to the DOHC block.

If you're getting into doing something radical tho, there are a few other things you could try...

2.0 Zetec ? or how about a 24V cossie ??

Hi pinto, ive considered 24v cossy and also zetec but i dont see much advantage in the zetec over the disadvantages ie they were never fitted in transits as standard!
24v cossy  now your talking but, its that all important (to me anyway) MPG :( im wanting to uses the transit as a daily driver again once shes back on the road! i did consider 24v cossy and LPG but really there arnt enough LPG stations locally! my main thinking behind dohc8v-16v is i could fit an 8v and upgrade to a 16v later!

well, if MPG is a major factor, then its not really possible to beat a derv lump....

How about traking down a late model TDi 2.4 or even the 2.5 turbo from the scorpio ?

Oh no its not that much of a concern :D I like my petrol motors 8) Diesels are great for some things (ive put a Di in my pickup) but i like the smoothness and quietness of a petrol - its just the difference between 18 and 20mpg is alot more than 30 and 32 !!! if that makes any sence :?

yup, I understand (running a turbo'd V6 myself )

DOHC sounds a good bet then...ive posted somewhere about one on ebay...everything for an injection engine (engine, loom, and electricals)...currently £1....

luke the dohc trany is hard to find as nobody wanted them as the di was a much better option for most firms ! as i have told you i think i had a brandnew dohc transit it was not that good on petrol about 25-28 but it was running a cat and phuuuueee did that stink  on a run you should get more , but the v6 will return you 20ish but nice and smooth and relaxing to drive ! the di is the best engine that ford ever made but why were they just so noisey!
