Yes, surely MK1 and MK2 Transits were built in Germany, but tell this to the many stupid germans they're around! Many think it's as british as mint sauce, jeremy clarkson or the queen! In case of engines, all period german Fords were equipped with the german Cologne V4: There are 1.2, 1.3, 1.5 and 1.7 engines around, these were fitted even to german Capris, Consuls and Granadas and continental european only Taunus M-Series (The equivalents in Britain were the Cortina, Corsair, Zephyr and Zodiac) That's why I have to look in Britain for Essex V4 spares!

I see, I forgot the V4 wasn't a German option

How do you mean not a German option? They had the Cologne V4 just not the Essex V4.

Sorry what I should have said was 2L V4, wasn't the cologne V4 a 1.7L?

Yeah, the german 1.7 was a Cologne, but also appeared in the Transit MK1 as 1.2, 1.3 and 1.5 versions! Essex V4s in Germany were available for the MK1 only between 1971-77 and only in 2.0 version, no 1.7 Essex here! They were sold in such a small number here, so today a very few are still around, even the Feuerwehr preferred the Cologne 1.7!

I do think the ADAC would have been the way to go! it's about £70 a year for Europe wide cover, and the German side of the cover is excellent!

OK Mark, there were 2 litre essex feuerwehrs around, but compared with the 1.7 cologne, only very few! :( Is this one you told about still for sale? How long is it ago?

Hey!

Sorry for the delay in answer! This transit is still for sale on a "e-bay" type of auction. It did not sell first time as the price reserve was not met. I was the highest bidder with 150 and they were asking something around 400e, we didn't really get to the final price before I backed out. Now it's on auction with highest bid being 50e, ending 16.10. I don't know about the language skills of the sellers but I think english won't be a problem. Seller is a group of five, spokeswoman is satu.ekman@netti.fi

It's located near Helsinki, so there's just 15 km to Lübeck-ferry or bit over 130 km to Hanko for Superfast to Rostock.

The car seems to be driveable, it was left standing only because it would not start and that was caused by the distributor being loose and off timing. Brakes might need some attention but at least there is no leaks as the pedal feeled ok. And if there is something to do I think I have all the tools needed and can help.

This transit has been white originally. It's made in Britain, i checked the ID-plate. The interior is not original. Drivers seat is off a GM van I think but the original would have been terrible to sit on for a trip to Spain so I understand why it was replaced. The lights, front wings etc. are original and in quite good condition. Rear door handle has been removed to get the "buttocks" on. Wheel arches have been repaired and poorly finished, they need a lot of filler or new steel. Side door low edge is rusted through altough it does not look bad from outside. Front wings seemed to be ok.

Alltogether it's quite rare, not too rusty (it's had some repairs), driveable, needs bodywork, paint, front bumper, drivers seat, rear bumpers...

At least some of it you can get at http://www.oldcars.de

I can help with transportation, pick-up and everything if needed.

It's 1,7 essex, yearmodel 1966 and yes it's the block-heater cable on the front grille. It's a necessity up here or at least very, very recommendable to preserve the engine and save fuel during winter.

Here is the link to the auction where you can see a picture from 1998.

http://www.huuto.net/fi/showitem.php3?itemid=39697857

Translation of the description:

Previously owned by Circus Finlandia. On sale because lack of time. Buy yourself a project for the winter.
No MOT, been standing for a year.

Licensed for 1+7 passengers
Driveable with b-class license

The whole rear area can be made to bed, roof terrace, containers rear for gas or water, inside a water tap and gas stowe. Petrol engine.
