Pinto into Mk5 = LEZ Compliance

Postby dieselhead123 » Mon Sep 19, 2011 7:02 am

In a few weeks we will be fitting a 2.0 pinto engine into a 2.5di Mk5 chassis cab for a customer, who is not a forum member.
This will make the truck LEZ compliant and therefore avoid the need for the customer to replace the vehicle with a newer unit.
I will start a thread, or add to this one, of the work. This will including pictures and other information, part numbers and anything else that may be of use to you chaps.
We are in the process of purchasing a 'project' van to use as a 'guinea pig' and hope the information will be of use to some of you.
We have made arrangements with local firms to 'reproduce' some of the parts, the engine mounts will be manufactured 'in house'.
The hope is that once the test has been completed that we will be able to supply 'kits' and even carry out the work for any of you who still need to meet the LEZ.
We are considering other engines, 2.0 zetec as fitted to the early Mondeo, a 3.0 essex for another forum member, (secret  ), any other suggestions :?:

2.0ltr zetec into a mk5? How will that work then as the zetec are all front wheel drive.

Interesting idea though as if you can get it in and working then there are a fair few versions of engines you could stick in.

Surely it's only a matter of which way the engine is mounted, which dictates the driven wheels :?
BL used to do this years ago with the "A" and "B" series engines

Now, a 2 litre Focus petrol engine would be fun in the MK5 :P

Surely the 2l dohc woud be the easiest? As it's already been done by Ford.

Me neither, hence my confused smiley :D

I know that it used to be done, but modern engines may not be as adaptable :)

Some interesting ideas here lads.
We already have the pintos sussed, parts being copied and new Mk5 mounts, working on the essex one. The easy bit is getting the engine on the gearbox, the worst bit with all the modern engines is the conversion to efi and all the ignition management system. The dohc was fitted, to a different gearbox though, is a bit rare and still has all the management issues to deal with. The idea being simple conversions utilising the existing di gearbox and readily available parts. No point developing a conversion that requires a dollop of rocking horse poo to complete :!:

If you have the ecu and sensors, making a loom is not too difficult, just a bit time consuming for the first one.

How about the 2.9 EFi tim!

With all these petrol engines going in it might be a good idea to become an LPG specialist too? ;)

Funny that mate, been offered an lpg kit with one of the pintos, old 'sandwich plate' type, just a bit concerned about the ulw on the transit truck I am doing and 'duel fuel' might be too confusing for a scaffolder

Think I would rather put the lpg kit on the di, improve the 1/4 mile time, or would that be 'cheating'?

Thats not cheating mate!

I might ask you to have a quick look at my LPG system to see if you can get it running (still awaiting a couple of parts though) because I haven't got a clue!

Matt, should touch base with you this week so you can have the towbar.

Others, anyone got one of those 2.0dohc motors on the floor, I could do with a measurement from one. What I need is the distance to the nearest mm, from the rear of the block face to the clutch face of the flywheel, must be a transit flywheel as fitted to the engine when mated to the mt75 dohc gearbox.
Thanks in advance lads
